Have you ever been exposed to identity theft? You probably have, even if you don’t realize it. I recently received a letter from my health insurance company stating there was a breach in their customer information database. Unfortunately, my information was stored in the data center that was breached. To their credit, the health insurance company notified me and offered to pay for a year of credit monitoring service. But I still don’t like that my information was potentially exposed to identity thieves.

With the plethora of ways personal information can be stolen, it’s almost a matter of time before someone gets your info. The threat is real, even if you do not become a victim of identity theft.

After receiving the letter from my health insurance company I researched identity theft protection services, and IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® stood out among the best. The following are a few of the main features, then I will dig a little deeper to show you why IDENTITY GUARD ® EXTRA CAUTION® is worth your consideration.

The following is a list of some of the main features offered by IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® and other IDENTITY GUARD® products. And even if you aren’t interested in using their identity theft protection over the long term, you can still use it to get your free credit score. Some of the features include:

  • 30-Day free trial with enrollment
  • 30-Day Satisfaction Guarantee
  • Identity Theft Insurance*
  • Identity Theft Recovery Assistance: ITAC, the Identity Theft Assistance Center, helps you recover if you ever become a victim.
  • Internet Surveillance
  • Lost Wallet Protection
  • Online Financial Tools
  • 3 Credit Scores based on data from Equifax®, Experian®, and TransUnion®
  • Credit Bureau Monitoring
  • Quarterly Credit Updates

IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® is $14.95 per month after your 30 day free trial, unless you opt to discontinue the service.

Free credit score from IDENTITY GUARD®

IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® is probably the best way to get your free credit score because you can enroll for the free 30-day IDENTITY GUARD® trial, get your credit score, then cancel if you decide this isn’t a service you wish to continue using. Most other free credit score offers only have a 7 day window and it may take 2-3 days to receive your credit score, giving you a very short window to cancel your service.

IDENTITY GUARD® credit score dashboard

The IDENTITY GUARD® credit score dashboard is easy to read and offers additional information to help explain your credit score and give you ideas on how to improve your credit score. IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® will also give you frequent updates so you can monitor all changes to ensure accuracy and ensure there are no signs of identity theft.

Identity theft protection from IDENTITY GUARD® Extra Caution®

IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® offers best in class identity theft protection, going above and beyond the services offered by similar credit monitoring companies. In addition to credit monitoring (standard among these companies), IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® offers something extra – public record and internet monitoring. Basically, the service scans the internet for your name and/or credit card information and any time they see any signs of either, you get a notification. This can alert you to changes in your public record or signs that your credit card information has been stolen or leaked online.

Identity theft insurance. The IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® service offers up to $1 million identity theft insurance* — with no deductible — to help you reclaim what was taken from you. The insurance claim requires that you report the theft within 90 days and work with your financial institution and allow IDENTITY GUARD® to assist in the recovery. The major stipulations are that you: report your loss to IDENTITY GUARD® within 90 days; you let them help you recover your losses, you apply for reimbursement from your financial institution.*

IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® offers so much with their service, so let’s break it down a bit to understand how much of this you can do on your own and how much of it you can’t.

Free credit  scores. You pretty much can’t get a free credit score unless you sign up for a trial offer with a credit monitoring service, or something similar. Most of these offers are for 7 day trials. IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® offers a 30-day free trial with enrollment, so you have much more time to evaluate the service, and if you decide it isn’t for you, cancel it.

Credit monitoring. If you are, have been at one point, or suspect you may be a victim of Identity Theft, then you should monitor your credit regularly to ensure everything is as it should be. Again, you can do this on your own, but you would need to be proactive and remember to get your reports each month/quarter, as well as pay for your reports each time (that quickly adds up and would likely cost more than $15 per month). Using a credit monitoring service for this task is easier, cheaper, and automated, saving you time, effort, and money.

My assessment: If all you are looking for is a free credit score, IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® is the way to go. Simply remember to cancel your enrollment within the 30 day window and you get access to your credit scores and won’t pay anything. If you need more protection or wish to monitor your credit  score on a regular basis, IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION® offers what is perhaps the best value among similar services.

Get a free credit score and protect yourself from identity theft with IDENTITY GUARD® EXTRA CAUTION®.

I have only tried LifeLock, but I think the concept is the same. I believe there is certainly a case for companies like this – identity theft is only going up. Plus, the idea of monitoring your credit report is a good thing as well.

I may check out the 30 day trial.

  2. KP says

Ryan thanks for sharing your take on IDENTITY GUARD®. Having a 30-day trial window is definitely a huge plus for those who want their credit score.

I’m assuming the pricing you noted, “competitively priced at $9.99, $14.99, and $17.99” is on a monthly basis. Can you tell us how it compared with other leaders in identity theft protection area given your research?

    • Ryan says

KP, yes, the prices are on a monthly basis. As for comparing IDENTITY GUARD® to other ID theft protection companies, there were a lot of little things.

For example, most of these companies perform a credit monitoring service, which provides you access to your credit reports and scores, but few of them proactively monitor your report. IDENTITY GUARD® uses their technology to actively search the Internet for changes in your public record, or evidence your credit card info has been compromised. You will also get alerts to changes in your credit status, and there are several valuable offerings in the higher monthly packages, including anti-virus software, and online password vault to store you passwords, and the $1,000,000 insurance coverage.

Finally, they offer a 30-day free trial, which is about 4 times longer than most similar companies. So it gives you more time to try out the service and decide if it is something you want to continue paying for or not. In the mean time, you still get a free copy of your credit score.

Having your identity stolen is one of the most frustrating experiences of all time! It is definitely worth it to have it monitored.

  4. Kimberly says

Was anyone here using Identity Guard when Target had their security breech? Curious as to how it worked out for you. Would love to hear about your experience!
