Couchtater, The plan comes with both options, but I don't see why you can't just never order the DVDs, and only use the streaming. Just keep in mind that the streaming has fewer titles than the DVDs. But it's still a good idea if that is all you want.

To Couchtater,
NF's DVDs by mail is convenient. And streaming is another venue to view movies in addition to DVDs by mail that NF allows customers to do at no cost to them except for the monthly subscription fees that they already pay.

Do you have to receive dvds, or does NF send the dvds without a choice of not receiving them. I would rather stream movies than deal with the hassle of dvds.

Thanks for all the good tips and comments on Netflix /BB rental. Got a Netflix gift subscription 4-5 years ago. And continued the paid subscription after the gift subscription expired. Started with two disc unlimited and then down to 1 disc at a time. I'd say I am a movie buff. I know NF offered streaming but do not use it because I thought I have to download a program to use it. And with all the spam, trojans, malwares and viruses in the internet, I did not want to risk downloading it in my desktop. I like NF. I average 1 a week during the last 4-5 years for about $2.75+ a movie counting all the mail transit time. With all the competing shows on cable TV, I don't have much time to view the movies. So I placed NF on hold until after the holidays. Now I don't miss it. I thought NF is a good deal. Only thing is that when NF sends you a bad disc, they will replace it, but then you lose a week of viewing time. And you don't get credit for it. I would have like NF to give me credit by sending me 2 disc replacements from my queue, giving the customers credit for their mess up. I complained with no resolution. In a scale of 10 I give NF a 7 for satisfactory service. As for my subscription now on hold,
I might just completely cancel. Nothing against NF.
**On another note, did you guys read the news from Boston, Mass a couple of weeks ago about a postal worker who stole over 3000 NF disc from the mail he deliverered. So, if you did not receive any of your orders lately, guess where it may be. Postal worker was fired and now in deep kimchee. Enjoy your NF movies!!

I'll plug http://www.greencine.com - I am not affiliated.
Most of my stuff is via a hacked tivo and torrents (legal ones).

Great point, Curious Cat. Movies are a relatively inexpensive hobby - especially if you can get the $8.99 plan and stream unlimited movies. :)

Abigail, It sounds like downgrading your plan would save you a good bit of money. Probably a good idea - and you can always bump it up later if you need to. :-)

One thing many people may find is they substitute DVD viewing for some other activities because of how easy and rewarding (good recommendations) it is. If this is true the savings would have to factor in the substitution. If you you substitute for costly activities you can save money.
