Discipline and control is the key to achieving any of the items you mentioned. The recipe to good personal finance is quite straightforward as you mentioed, its just that life gets in the way!

In regards to savings accounts, I recently did a review of ING (vs HSBC) and while it is probably the easiest to use account, it has one of the lowest APY around. HSBC is about 0.5% higher, which can make a big difference in the long run.

Gail,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with cancer and leukemia and hope you don't have recurrences. I was not aware of the lack of a POD or beneficiary application, and assumed something like that would be covered with a will.

I still like ING and think they offer a great service that almost everyone can take advantage of.

I have been with ING Direct for several years and have always been happy. However I may be changing my mind. Two years ago, I had cancer and leukemia and almost died. My will was set up, however ING does not have a POD (payable on death) or beneficiary application. Can you give me a reason now to hang onto ING? But yes, space your money out in other high yield accounts.

Yeah, I think you've covered all the basics here. I don't have accounts with ING Direct, but I do keep accounts at three different banks. Putting unexpected income to work is also extremely important: otherwise I think you just won't get ahead if you squander even those gifts.
