Paying fees for being late on debt payments is an easy way to waste money (and hurt your credit in the process). Definitely get current on those credit cards first, then start paying stuff down.

K, The most important thing is that you have started to clear your debts. I wish you and your family the best of luck for the future.

I think the post was good. In the event that K doesn't read all of the baby steps post one thing wasn't stated explicitly. Her family needs to make a commitment to paying the minimum on all three credit calls each month.

Good luck K.

This seems to be sound advice.

Once our friend K gets the high from eliminating one debt, she should really be fired up.

K's real fortunate she has people like you to highlight her problems, and get advice that has worked for so many others.

Agreed, we need more info.

But, good heavens, get current. You won't be able to get into another car at a decent interest rate if you're behind on three credit cards anyway! Pay those off with the rebate (if it's enough) then start attacking that car loan.

Get current, get on a budget, get an emergency fund, and you'll be further along than 90% of the people you know.

I know I talk a lot on my site about interest order, but when you are paying late fees, you are effectively paying a *mush* higher interest rate on those cards in the form of those late fees. So getting those knocked down some so you aren't paying overlimit fees etc is very important.

As for what to do next, without details at Ryan said it is hard to decide, but looking into getting rid of the car regardless of the economic stimulus check is a good idea I think. If you can find a reliable used car to buy with some of the stimulas check as down payment tgat could work out too.

Good luck!!
