I am very happy for any one of us applying SWOT analysis on his/her personal finances. This is the surest way of succeeding in any business venture.

Thanks

Abigail, I'm glad you liked the article. I can't take credit for the idea though, and I'm probably not the first person to apply it to personal finance. But it is a good exercise and it can really help you take a look at all factors of your financial situation. For example, it's not just maximizing opportunities, but mitigating threats and weaknesses. It can be a critical mistake to solely focus on strengths or weaknesses while not addressing the other side of the equation. This goes for personal finance, business, career, athletics, and dozens of other fields. Take a look at the other factors in your financial situation and you may find areas for improvement. :)

This is brilliant! People take a hard look at their budgets, but rarely do they take a snapshot of their complete situation/abilities.

Unfortunately, for the near future, we're kind of maxed out on our opportunities. But I'm sure some things will shake loose in the future that will allow us to keep innovating!

It is fun, Wojo. I've also written about a couple other management principles in the past, such as:

Applying the Pareto Principle to Career and Finances.

Low Hanging Fruit.

Personal Finance Kaizen.

Writing a Financial Mission Statement.

There are probably one or two more in my archives somewhere. It's fun to try different things to make your personal life easier. :)

I'm glad to see you're tackling these topics! I did a series a while ago on applying business plans to personal finance, and it was a blast. There are so many awesome concepts, like SWOT, that we take for granted when we leave work at night, but they are so effective at home, too.

Sorry to hear that, Ken. But yeah, a pay cut is usually better than unemployment!

SWOT is a standard business practice. It can be a valuable process to go through and I recommend reading more in depth if you think you can apply it on a larger scale elsewhere - in your job, small business, life, etc.
