Citi ThankYou® Premier Card – Double Reward Points

by Michael

UPDATE: The Citi ThankYou Premier Card bonus is now expired.

Citibank recently launched a new line of cards and other financial products, including the Citi Checking Account, which are designed to attract consumers interested in earning rewards.  It’s no secret that many consumers have wised up over the last few years to the debt that credit cards can rack up, but when used responsibly, a credit card is a valuable tool that can flat out save you money – especially for travel rewards or airline points.  The Citi ThankYou® Premier Card aims to do just that.

Citi ThankYou® Premier Card

Citi ThankYou(SM) PremierKicking off things, the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card offers new cardholders the opportunity to earn 2x ThankYou® Points on all purchases for 24 months from account opening. After that, you will earn 1.2 ThankYou Points on purchases made at supermarkets, drug stores, gas stations, commuter transportation and parking. You can earn additional value when you redeem your points through the ThankYou Travel Center (see terms for additional details), and you will earn 1 ThankYou® Point for every $1 you spend on all other purchases.

Free companion airline ticket every year. Cardmembers will also receive a complimentary domestic companion ticket for airline travel within the continental USA. All you need to do to receive this complimentary companion travel ticket is book your travel through the Citi travel benefits provider, Spirit Incentives. You can receive one complimentary ticket each year. To top it off, you can also get a 15% discount when booking air travel through Citi’s travel benefits provider.

Anniversary bonus. Beyond the standard rewards program, cardholders will also receive an anniversary bonus, dependent on how long they’ve been a cardholder of the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card.  For example, if you earned 100,000 ThankYou® points the first year you owned the card, you would receive a 1% bonus of 1,000 points.  The longer you own the card, the larger the bonus, all the way up to 5% (When you own the card for 4+ years).  You won’t be able to retire from this benefit, but every little bit helps.

Redeem your rewards points for anything. Your ThankYou Points never expire, and you can use them for virtually anything, including gift cards, travel rewards, cash, electronics, and more. You can also receive a 33% more value when you redeem your ThankYou Points for airfare through the ThankYou Travel Center.

Here are some more details on this card:

  • Earn 2X’s ThankYou® Points on all your purchases for 24 months from account opening
  • After that, earn 1.2 ThankYou Points at supermarkets, drug stores, gas stations, commuter transportation and parking merchants and 1 ThankYou point for every $1 on all other purchases
  • Earn points for the miles you fly when you purchase a ticket with your Citi ThankYou Premier Card
  • No foreign transaction fee on purchases*
  • Annual complimentary domestic companion ticket, within the contiguous U.S.
  • No points cap and no expiration of points

This card offers solid rewards, especially for frequent travelers as it offers a complimentary domestic companion ticket and international travelers do not pay foreign transaction fees on purchases. The only downside is an annual fee of $125. However, the fee is waved for the first year and the complimentary domestic companion ticket should more than make up for the annual fee.

The Citi Thank You Premier Card isn’t for everyone and should only be considered by consumers who use their credit cards often enough to take advantage of the rewards program.  The ability to earn double reward points, plus the travel benefits make this a solid card for many frequent travelers.  For more information, visit the secure application page of the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card using any link found in this post.

One other thing to consider is that this is a no pre-set spending limit card. Even though Citibank does set a credit limit, they do not report this limit to the credit reporting agencies, which could cause a negative impact on your credit score.

Free money! A BIG fan of that. I love the offers that c.c. companies are throwing out there as of late. Huge incentive for those who have to fly cross-country as frequently as I do.

Why knock the annual fee when the free annual companion ticket is may be worth $100, $200 or more than the annual fee?

We aren’t knocking the annual fee, simply stating that it exists. This is becoming a popular way for airline cards to charge an annual fee – charge $100 or more for the card, but offer a free airline ticket in exchange. It promotes loyalty and encourages travel.
