This article was originally published on Personal Finance, Investing, & Career | Cash Money Life at How to Find Balance With Your Savings Goals.

One of the most effective ways to save money is by creating savings goals. This gives you a defined reason why you are saving for something, instead of just throwing money into a pot and pulling it out whenever you “want something.” If you want to take it a step further, you can create a sinking fund, or a unique subaccount for your savings goal. This is easy to do at many online banks, including ING Direct and Ally Bank.

Sub accounts make it easier to balance multiple savings goals, but they also make it easier to spread your money out too far if you aren’t careful. When you are trying to save for multiple things all from the same paycheck, you can end up allocating so much cash to your goals, you have little life over for day to day living. While it is good to have savings plans in effect, it is also very crucial that you find a balance for each of your goals. Otherwise you may end up financially strapped in one area and find you have to take from one account to make up for another deficiency, essentially destroying your entire plan.

Do you have multiple savings goals?

So how can you keep things in balance? It’s not difficult but does require some forethought and continuous effort. Here are some tips for finding a balance in savings goals:

Make a List

In order to know how you have to save, you have to know how you want to save. Start by making a list of what you want to save for and define your goals (why you want/need to save). Categories like retirement, emergency fund, vacations, household bills, and big ticket purchases can be a start to your list, depending on what your goals and needs are.

Prioritize Your List

Once you have established a list, you may find that you do not have enough income to sustain all of these goals. You need to prioritize the categories in order of importance for you and your financial needs. You need to establish the priority of each item so you can split your allocations accordingly. Included in the prioritization should be the definition of which of your savings goals are short term and which are long term and which goals are most likely achievable and realistic.

Check Out Your Budget

You need to gather your income statements and your bills if you have not already established a budget. Figure out just how much money you have left to put towards your goals each month on a consistent basis.

Do Your Division

For each of your goals, you need to establish the amount you strive to achieve. You also need to establish the amount of time you need to accomplish your goal. For instance, if your goal is to max out your IRA each year, you would start with your $5,000 annual contribution limit, then divide by 12, which gives you $416.66 per month (max limit for a single investor under age 50 – see this link for all IRA contribution limits).

A good short term example would be a large purchase (say a new refrigerator) that costs $1000. You’d like to purchase the refrigerator within the next six months. Dividing the $1000 by 6 months, you would need to set aside roughly $170 a month or about $43 a week to achieve your goal.

It may be more difficult to establish the longer term goals such as those for retirement but as time goes on and your income increases, you can gain more perspective about how much you need to save to achieve goals for the future. Short term goals may be easier to figure out. You can start with an emergency fund if you can’t afford multiple kinds of savings plans. Try to save up 6-12 months of living expenses to get going.

Make Your Changes

Your savings plan needs constant care and upgrading much like your budget. If you consistently work towards fine-tuning your goals and distributions of monies, you will likely achieve success financially with all of your goals. Goals will also change in priority depending on daily life and financial needs so keep up with your plan and keep it active.

Part of it is due to their risque commercials and advertisements. But those risque ads do exactly what they are supposed to do – bring attention to the company. My experiences with GoDaddy have all been positive so far, and I hope your experiences are the same.

But to be honest, I don’t actually go to the actual store very often anymore because I prefer using coupon codes and buying items from their store online. It saves me money and I don’t have to fight the crowds. The best part is – I can usually either have it delivered directly to my house, or to the nearest store where I can pick it up at my convenience. That’s a great thing during the holiday season!

Advantages of using Best Buy Promo Codes

The best part about using Best Buy coupon and promotional codes is saving money without even having to set foot in the store – unless you opt for the free pickup at your local Best Buy store or you want to look at the items in person or comparison shop.

Best Buy deals are often found for just about every item they sell in their stores, including computers, software, video games and gaming consoles, music, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, mobile phones, digital and video cameras, home and car audio equipment, GPS systems, and home appliances such as washing machines, dryers, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators and more.

The other advantage of using these Best Buy promo codes is that they all come directly from Best Buy, so you know they are the official deals. Be sure to check back often because these codes are updated weekly!

Best Buy Black Friday Madness

This is another reason why I like to use Best Buy coupons and promo codes – to avoid the rush like you see at Best Buy on Black Friday!

Best Buy Corporate Information

Best Buy was founded in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1966 under the name Sound of Music and focused on high end audio gear. By 1970 Best Buy was bringing in $1 million in annual revenues. They became known as Best Buy in 1983 and went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1985 under the stock symbol BBY.

Today, Best Buy is the largest electronics retailer in the US and Canada, bringing in 19% of the total market share. Those are huge numbers when you consider their competitors such as Wal-Mart, Fry’s Electronics, and Amazon!

Best Buy’s subsidiaries include Geek Squad, Magnolia Audio Video, Pacific Sales, and, in Canada they operate under both the Best Buy and Future Shop label. Best Buy also has stores in Mexico, Turkey, and several other European locations.

Best Buy’s associates are not commissioned salesmen, so you know they are offering insights to the products that offer the best features for your needs, not the product that offers them the highest commission.

About Quicken & The Intuit Family

Quicken is a powerful desktop money management tool which is useful for tracking your income, expenses, investments, bills, business income, medical bills and procedures, and other related topics, depending on which version you purchase.

Quicken is produced by Intuit, which also makes QuickBooks, TurboTax, and Mint.com, which are all industry leaders in their respective areas (small business, tax preparation software, and online money management). The cool thing about all of these products is that they typically integrate very easily since they are all produced by the same company. So if you track your finances with Quicken, you can import your information into TurboTax and simplify your tax preparation time. This is particularly helpful if you use the Home and Business or Rental Property Manager versions, as it helps you automatically classify your income and expenses into the appropriate categories.

If you are a small business owner who does a lot of business or deals with inventory or anything else complicated, you may find QuickBooks to be a better accounting tool, especially if you have multiple employees. If you are interested in learning more or taking a test drive, you can check out these QuickBooks coupon codes. (QuickBooks offers a free trial of their online version, which should give you an idea of the functionality you will have with their desktop version).

Other Money Management Tools

Quicken is probably the most popular desktop money management tool since Microsoft Money went away, but it isn’t the only option you have. There are others with different goals, including You Need a Budget, which is focused primarily on helping people budget their money, but doesn’t offer much in the way of tracking investments and similar tasks which Quicken does very well. See how they compare.

There are also a host of online money management tools, including Intuit’s Mint.com, which is free. Mint.com gives users a quick dashboard for tracking their income, expenses, and overall budget. It’s not quite as robust as Quicken, especially if you have more detailed investment or business needs, but it does a good job of giving users a snapshot view of their finances.

This article was originally published on Personal Finance, Investing, & Career | Cash Money Life at Amazon Prime and 7 Other Ways to Use Amazon.

I have been using Amazon.com for over 10 years now, which is a long time in the Internet world. I first started using Amazon when I was in the military and living overseas because they made it easy for me to send gifts to loved ones back home, as well as order things for myself that I couldn’t buy at the base exchange or on the local economy. Slowly but surely, Amazon has become the default shopping option in our household. If you aren’t using Amazon, you should at least check it out, and we’ll also give you a few extra reasons to use Amazon that many people aren’t aware of.

Why I love Amazon

It all boils down to one word: convenience. I can go to one website and research and compare prices on similar items, crowd-source reviews from a community that cares about helping others – not making more sales, and I can order virtually anything that will be shipped to my door in two business days.

“Oh sure, you say – anyone can ship to you in two days, if you’re willing to pay for it.”

True. But with Amazon Prime, you can get unlimited two day shipping and a lot more. And while Amazon Prime comes with a subscription fee, the cost of the subscription is easily recouped if you order frequently through Amazon and take advantage other Amazon Prime features. In my opinion, Amazon Prime is one of the most underrated features at Amazon.com.

1. Amazon Prime – the Standard of Online Shopping Clubs

Many stores offer shopping clubs and similar benefits. But I have yet to find a store, online or off, which has a club as cool as Amazon Prime. To be clear, you have to pay to get all the features of Amazon Prime ($79 per year), but there are a few ways you can get a free trial, or a free extended trial (see Amazon Moms and Amazon Student, below).

Amazon Prime features:

Free unlimited two day shipping from items sold and/or fulfilled by Amazon.com

Free streaming videos from a select library of movies and TV shows

Ability to borrow Kindle books for free

Two day shipping didn’t seem like a big deal to me, until I experienced it during the holidays. Now it’s nice to know that I can order something and know it will arrive at my doorstep in one or two business days (I’ve had purchases arrive in one business day on more than one occasion). The free streaming video and ability to borrow a book a month on the Kindle are nice bonuses.

A couple notes: the unlimited two day shipping doesn’t include items sold by vendors unless the items are fulfilled by Amazon. Also, the streaming video library isn’t the deepest, but they do have a lot of quality movies and TV shows, including a recently signed deal with the Discover Channel (just one more reason to use Amazon as a cable TV alternative). Amazon Prime is by far the best deal in tech right now. Learn more.

2. Amazon Subscribe & Save - Save Money on Auto-shipments

If buy things on a regular basis, then you may enjoy shopping online with Amazon Subscribe & Save. With this program, you can set up a monthly purchase order to have items shipped directly to your door and enjoy a savings of 5-15% on your purchase. This works for a variety of items you use on a regular basis, including things like food items, paper towels, coffee, health items, toiletries, and more. You can also use it for things like diapers and wipes if you have children, but before you do, be sure to check out the next program on our list to enjoy an even greater savings on those items. Learn more.

3. Amazon Mom – Not Just for Moms

Despite the program name, Amazon Mom is not just for Moms – anyone can sign up for it. However, the main benefits are aimed at moms and caretakers of small children. The benefits include three months of FREE Two-Day Shipping with Amazon Prime and 20% off diapers and wipes which are auto-delivered to your doorstep with Subscribe & Save (the normal savings rate for non-Amazon Mom shoppers is 5% for diapers and wipes, so this is a substantial savings).

To top it off, you can get additional months added to your free shipping with Amazon Mom. I’m not exactly sure how this works, but my wife signed up for the program before Christmas and her free two day shipping has been extended from the original 3 months, to a total of 11 months. I believe it has to do with taking advantage of special offers, but I’m not 100% certain. If anyone knows for sure, please leave a comment!

This is a free program, so if you are a parent or caretaker of small children, there is no reason not to sign up (or even if you just want to get 3 months of free 2-day shipping). Learn more.

4. Amazon Student – Just for Students

Amazon Student is an extension of Amazon Prime, but it is limited to students with a .edu e-mail address. I wasn’t aware of this program until I recently took a writing course at a local university. With Amazon Student, you can get a limited free 6 month Amazon Prime trial (the free trial does not include the free streaming video, but it does include the free two day shipping). Students can then extend their subscription to Amazon Prime for half the cost of the regular version – and the paid version of Amazon Student includes all the bells and whistles of the Amazon Prime others experience. From Amazon:

As an Amazon Student member you’ll also get six months of FREE Two-Day Shipping with Amazon Prime on eligible purchases, and will automatically continue receiving Amazon Prime shipping benefits at a cost of $39 a year for up to four years with automatic renewal.

To top it off, students are eligible for special deals, free release date delivery of games, books, and movies, and more. If you are in school, I highly recommend it. Learn more.

5. Amazon mp3 Store

iTunes still has the corner on the market, but Amazon has a nice offering in terms of price and selection. Amazon frequently offers a wide range of albums for $5 or less, which is something you won’t find in the iTunes store. In addition to savings, there are two other advantages of using Amazon for your mp3 purchases: the first is that you can quickly and easily download your albums directly into your iTunes, so your music is instantly portable. The second is the coolest feature – Amazon automatically stores all of your purchases through the mp3 store in the cloud in he Amazon Cloud Player, giving you Internet access to your music wherever you are, including streaming through your smartphone, if you have one. This is a great option if you have an unlimited data plan as you can stream music at work, in the car, or wherever you have access to a signal. Learn more.

6. Amazon Kindle Special Offers

Amazon Kindle with Special Offers

I love my Amazon Kindle. It’s an awesome little device, and it’s incredibly convenient to have a library of books at my fingertips. While I enjoy a nice hard cover book, I find that I actually read more quickly with a Kindle. I haven’t converted my entire library to Kindle books, but I rarely buy physical books any more, unless it is a book I anticipate I will reference frequently. There are also a ton of free Kindle books to get you started.

If you are thinking about getting a Kindle, I recommend buying the Kindle with special offers. It costs about $25 less than the other versions, and gives you special deals on Kindle books, throughout Amazon, and at local vendors. The special offers are unobtrusive, and only appear on the home page (where your library is located) and on the front cover when the device is turned off. The ads in no way interfere with your reading experience.

The reason I bought a Kindle was actually based on one of these deals, which saved me enough money to cover the cost of the Kindle, and then some. I can’t guarantee you will get a free Kindle like I did (it was essentially free), but I can tell you that you will be able to save money on regular purchases.

Don’t want a Kindle? You can still use the free Kindle App to read Kindle books on your PC, Mac, smartphone, etc. It’s a convenient way to read books across a variety of platforms, and since it always syncs when you have an internet connection, you can pick up right where you left off.

7. Amazon Instant Video

My wife and I gave up cable TV almost two years ago. While I don’t miss cable, I still enjoy the occasional movie. Netflix and Blockbuster are both great options, and will satisfy most movie watchers’ demands. But some movies aren’t available on the Netflix streaming video subscription, so Amazon Instant video is a great option as it allows you to purchase and download movies, or rent them a la carte. There is also a special library of movies available for free streaming rentals for member of Amazon Prime, which is a great value for Prime subscribers. Learn more.

8. Amazon Web Services

Though it might seem like this is only for the techies out there, Amazon’s S3 service can be used by anyone who needs online storage. This includes people who have websites and need an industrial strength server, need to use a CDN, or want a place to store their online backups. But Amazon’s S3 servers are also great for people who want to back up their personal or professional files as well. You can store backups of your photos, files, or even mirrors of your hard drive with Amazon’s secure storage. The cost is very affordable and well worht the peace of mind it offers.

How does Amazon Offer All of This Value?

Amazon offers a ton of value, even though some of it comes at a cost, like the $80 a year Amazon Prime membership. I can tell you that I easily get that much value out of the two day shipping, and I’m sure some people use hundreds of dollars worth of shipping, not to mention the free streaming videos, etc. The bottom line, though, is that Amazon offers these deals because they know that in the long run, their customers are going to stick around longer and spend more money with them. And it has certainly worked for me. But you know what, I’m happy to give Amazon my business. They offer me great value, and I’ve become a loyal customer. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

The key to a great holiday shopper is knowing how to extend your budget and how to wow with the gifts you buy. We’ll help you with the latter in this article, as we’ve compiled 25 great Christmas gift ideas under $50. All of these gifts can be purchased online and if you look hard enough, you might be able to find them even cheaper with the use of online coupon codes. The list has Christmas gift ideas for mom, dad, siblings friend coworkers and pretty much anyone else you would want to buy a Christmas gift for. Merry Christmas!

Christmas Gift Ideas Under $50

1. Back to Basics Egg and Muffin Toaster (Walmart: $34.00) – Cooking eggs on your stove can be tough and messy so why not cook them in your toaster? Believe it or not this toaster has room for your egg while you’re toasting. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

2. Hand Selected Red and White Wines from Napa Valley (Tasting Room: $29.99) – Before you go thinking you can give out six gifts with one purchase, these are only tasting bottles, each with 50ml. You can handpick any six bottles you want to form your set, and then have it shipped right to your door.

3. ProActive Sports Trunk It Golf Gear Organizer (Amazon: $32.99) – I wish I had one of these (hint, hint) because for the golfer, it’s quite a hassle to get everything you need into one organized space. A golf bag just won’t cut it and this organizer is perfect.

4. Sushi Serving Board with Chopsticks (Crate and Barrel: $19.95) – Have to be honest that I’m not the biggest fan of sushi but I’m the minority. This gift is one of the more inexpensive on our list and if you know a Sushi lover, or a cook, this makes for a great gift.

5. Stylish Engraved Pill Box (Gift Tree: $34.95) – This gift is obviously geared for the older generation with the ability to engrave the box with anything of your choosing. While this might not be the most exciting gift you’ll give this Christmas, it’s fills a necessity in style.

6. NFL Team Grill Cover (NFL Shop: $44.99) – Barbecue and sports go hand and hand so rather than leave your grill out in the rain where it can rust, take a look at purchases an NFL team grill cover. Just make sure you get the right team because the wrong one will probably end up in the fire.

7. Slouchy Hoody w/ Headphones (Karma Loop: $42.00) – Another gift that accomplishes two things at one, this hooded sweatshirt provides heat and music at the same time. Pockets in the front make sure you can fit your iPod or any other MP3 player comfortably.

8. High Tech Money Jar (Discovery Store: $14.99) – As a kid, I had a number of different money banks, all that did something different. I loved to watch the coins fall down the shoot, light things up and make cool sounds. This bank actually keeps track of the money inside it, so you won’t have to count your change!

9. Bubble Wall Mount Fish Tank (Amazon: $19.44) – If you have a friend in need of a pick-me-up, a fish is a great idea. Regular fish bowls are pretty boring though, so why not get something you can mount on any wall! Installation is easy and hassle free.

10. Spy Net Secret Mission Video Watch (EToys: $49.99) – One of the more expensive gifts on our list, the junior spy watch is every kids dream. Little do they know that working for the government in real life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be but they won’t need to know that for a long time.

11. Black Finish 5 Piece Fireplace Set (Bed Bath and Beyond: $49.99) – Again specific to colder climates, a fireplace set ensures that fires are not only beautiful places for warmth but also safe. A good fire needs oxygen and there’s nothing stupider than trying to move burning logs around with your hands.

12. Sharper Image Foot Massager (Macy’s: $49.99) – The perfect gift for any wife or girlfriend, this foot massager also has a slickness to it, with it’s black and red design. Not really the foot massaging type, I’ll certainly be buying one of these this year!

13. Emerson Refractor Telescope w/ Tripod (Bed Bath and Beyond: $19.99) – This isn’t your “look for new planets” type telescope, but for just under $20, you can get a clear picture of sporting events, birds, or anything else within a solid mile. Don’t use it to spy on your neighbors though.

14. Woman’s Cable Boot Slipper (Target: $14.99) – I had the girlfriends help on this one because this doesn’t seem to be the most awesome of gifts but she absolutely loves it. Just goes to show you that men don’t understand what women want sometimes.

15. Charter Club Blanket, Reservseable Sherpa Throw (Macys: $34.99) – Normally $80.00, this blanket/throw is perfect for colder climates during winter nights. It comes is a variety of colors and is comprised of machine-washable polyester

16. VTech Touch Mobi Go Learning System (Toys R Us: $49.99) – Giving this gift to a child might not bring an applause but giving it to a parent of a child (so they can use it to teach) is probably a better idea. VTech has created an interactive teaching tool that most children should love to learn from.

17. Shower Clock Radio and Mirror (Macy’s: $44.99) - Another gift of many talents, this device is perfect for the wanna be singers who love to belt a high tone in the shower. It doubles as a mirror so you can shave while singing. Might be a bit dangerous though, so proceed with caution.

18. Classic Continental Rucksack (LL Bean: $39.50) – I wish I was more of an outdoorsman but sadly, that’s not the case. Nevertheless, any good mountain climber or camper needs a place to keep all of their clothing and gadgets and this rucksack certainly does a nice job.

19. Faux Leather Envelop Laptop Case (Macy’s: $29.00) – This laptop case is perfect when taking a long trip, as it’s slick and sleek. Laptops are easily damaged during transport (and more specifically during flight) so rather than buying an extended few-hundred dollar warranty, this will do.

20. Apple iPod 2gb Shuffle Bundle with Accessory Kit (Walmart: $49.98) – The most expensive gift on our list, you can obtain the newest model of the Apple iPod 2gb Shuffle with an accessory kit containing everything you need. This gift has the potential to cost more than $50 however, depending on just how many extra accessories you choose.

21. Romantic Snood (Macy’s: $39.00) – I was wondering what a snood was before this, but apparently it’s a scarf/hoodie combination, perfect for women who like to be cold in style. The reviews are all from women who love it, so that would suggest this is a strong wife/girlfriend buy.

22. 12 Piece Kitchen Aid Cutlery Set (Target: $49.99) – Having a good knife in the kitchen is important to making a good mean and if you can’t afford the absolute best (which in my opinion is Cutco) then you should look for durable, long lasting, high performance knives. And here they are.

23. Tek Nek Rock and Ride Pony (KMart: $29.99) – Another thoughtful gift for a young child, the Tek Nek Rock and Rid Pony walks, gallops, sings and does a lot of other cool things too. Don’t get the wrong idea though, this Pony is not for riding.

24. Silver Plated Frame Collection from Martha Stewart (Macy’s: $19.99) - It’s best to stay neutral with gifts to co-workers and a silver plated picture frame does just that. This isn’t from Martha’s prison collection but it’s still a nice gift.

25. JBL Duet Computer Speakers (Gifts.com: $36.56) – Last but not least, anyone with a computer would love a set of cool speakers they could use everyday. The most important feature of any set of speakers is the sound, and these guarantee to provide top quality performance.

Even though RedBox movie rentals are very inexpensive, you can often get a free rental code from RedBox, so you can enjoy a DVD or Blu-Ray movie rental free of charge, provided you return it by the 9pm deadline the following night (standard rental rates still apply if you don’t return the DVD on time).

How to Get a Free RedBox Movie Rental Code:

The easiest way to get a free RedBox code is to visit the RedBox website and sign up for a RedBox account.

Make a movie reservation online, pick up the movie and return it after you watch it.

Then you will receive a free DVD rental.

Simple as that!

More Ways to Get a Free RedBox Rental Coupon:

The next way to get a free movie rental from RedBox is by signing up for SMS alerts, which will send you a text message on the first Monday of each month with a free rental code in it. This is a steady stream of free movie rentals coming your way! The codes are only good for that day and only one use, so you need to take advantage of them right away or they will go unused.

RedBox also sends free rental codes via SMS on special occasions, such as holidays. You can’t always predict when they will come, so keep your eyes open!

Note: Don’t lose a RedBox movie. It will cost you!
