After reflecting at the end of this year, I realized that this had been a good year for my personal finances. I was able to set up an account on Mint.com, I opened a rewards credit card, began automating my finances, and I began to save money by more actively purchasing items online – including items you may not normally think to purchase online.

How to save money buying glasses and contacts online

This past February I broke my glasses and went to the optical store to get new frames. I don’t have a lot of disposable income, so I pretty surprised when I saw that a new pair of eyeglasses would cost me $249.99

I am a college student, so I am sure you can understand that I did not have that money to spend. That said, I also needed glasses to read. After asking the store owner if there were any discounts at the store (there were none) I went online to see if I could find any and I stumbled upon several articles about purchasing glasses online.

The New York Times and several notable newspapers had written about this, but this was the first time I learned that you can purchase eyewear online for significantly less. When I looked online I discovered I could purchase the exact same pair of eyeglasses online that I had been looking at for less than half the price. According to the New York Times, a frame that costs less than $25 to make in Europe can retail for at least $150 at an optical shop in the United States.

At that point I decided to purchase my glasses online, but I didn’t know where to start. I stumbled upon the blog GlassyEyes, a blog dedicated to purchasing glasses online, and I found out everything I needed to know.

I learned that all I needed in order to buy glasses online was a prescription and a PD measurement from my eye doctor, and that the doctor was required to give this to me. Also, the customer service at some of the online stores is great; you can even call them for help finding the best frames for yourself.

I normally have my frames adjusted, and apparently you can just go to a local optical shop and they will do it for a very small fee.

Where to buy glasses, sunglasses, and contacts online

If you want to know where to start, here were some popular websites to purchase glasses:

www.Eyeglasses.com: Website that sells glasses; received an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

www.goggles4u.com: Sells prescription glasses and sunglasses online.

www.EyeBuyDirect.com: Popular website for glasses. 5% off any EyeBuyDirect.com order! Code: EYEBUYPROMO

You can purchase more than just glasses online though. It turns out that the online contact industry is very large as well. You can save up to $10 per contact box if you purchase online. I have several friends that do this and they really recommend it.

Here are some popular websites to purchase contacts:

www.1800contacts.com: Very well known website that sells prescription and colored contacts online; you can see some their commercials on television.

www.Lens.com: Another popular website

Lastly, you can purchase sunglasses online. Looking back, I cannot believe I once spent $200 on a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses at the Sunglass hut. Here are some good online stores:

www.FramesDirect.com: Largest glasses website online, they sell prescription glasses, contacts, sunglasses, and more.

www.Zappos.com: They now sell sunglasses!

Purchasing eyewear online does not only lower my costs, but it is also convenient.

I hope you all had a great New Years and I hope this post was of help to you for the upcoming year!

My wife and I discussed cloth and disposable diapers before we had our first child. We were both intrigued by the idea of using cloth diapers for several reasons – possible cost savings, environment, better for child, convenience of not having to run to the store a couple times per week. Of course, we had our doubts as well. How much would they cost? Would they leak? How much of a pain would it be to do laundry? etc.

So we did what we do for any other major purchase/decision. We researched it and talked to people we knew who had used cloth diapers. Let me tell you the first thing we found out: The cloth diapers manufactured today are not the kind of cloth diapers that were available when we were raised! We were concerned about having to fold the diapers around a squirming baby and fastening them with pins (not a fun sounding proposition). But cloth diapers made now may have many features that weren’t around just a few decades ago, they may have liners, plastic coverings, Velcro or button fasteners or a host of other features. In short, we were intrigued.

Benefits of using cloth diapers

Cloth diapers have the obvious advantage of being reusable. That is a great benefit for the environment, and saves you the hassle of going to the store in the middle of the night (though it doesn’t save you from the hassle of washing them, but more on that later). Cloth diapers can also be better for the baby because some disposable diapers have plastics or other chemicals which can irritate a baby’s sensitive skin.

Durability of cloth diapers

Cloth diapers can be used dozens if not hundreds of times before they wear out. Our friends have used their set of cloth diapers through three children and they are still holding up fine. And durability leads directly to long term cost savings. Obviously using them for three children will more than cover the cost of the diapers, but they should pay for themselves relatively quickly even if you only have one child.

How much do cloth diapers cost?

Prices for cloth diapers vary, from a couple dollars each, to more than $15 each. But the quality and features also vary. We currently use a one-size-fits-all model made by BumGenius, which run about $17 each at Amazon (though they can be found cheaper sometimes). We also tried a couple other brands but preferred the BumGenius brand (some companies will send you a free or discounted sample to try).

The beauty of cloth diapers is that while the upfront cost is much higher, the ongoing cost is much lower. Once you purchase them you are only paying for laundry detergent and the energy to wash/dry them. [Note: I've also known people who have passed along cloth diapers to other family members or bought/sold them on Craigslist, bot h of which could be a cheaper option if you are willing to do either].

The cost of disposable diapers

Contrast that to disposable diapers, which must be purchased for each use (raise your hand if you’ve ever used 3 diapers to complete one change because your baby decided changing time meant going time). Prices for disposable diapers also vary, ranging anywhere from roughly $.10 each to over $.25 each. Babies will use anywhere from 6-10 diapers per day, putting your average cost at roughly $.60-$2.50 per day, or about $20 to $75 per month (depending on brand and number of diapers used). Figure roughly 2 years or more of diapers and you are looking at $480 – $1800 literally thrown away.

Which is cheaper – cloth or disposable

Again, the upfront costs of cloth diapers are high enough to scare many people away.

$17 for a diaper?! Get out of here – I’ll buy a pack of 80 Huggies Ultra Elite Super Stopper Biodegradable disposables with a pretty print pattern, thank you very much.

And you’ll buy another pack next week. And another the week after that… and guess what, it’s 10pm and you just used your last diaper. Off to the grocery store you go.

Or, you can use this diaper calculator from DiaperPin.com and run some numbers. Enter the per unit cloth diaper cost, how many you will purchase, and the cost of your preferred brand of disposable diapers. Run the calculator and it will return how long it will take to recoup your initial expense, then show you cost savings over the following months. In most cases it should take only a couple months before you come out ahead and you should save well into the hundreds of dollars by the time you anticipate no longer needing diapers (this may not ring true if you pay for a diaper cleaning service).

Tip: if you are still concerned about cost, then be sure to add them to your baby registry for your baby shower.

Washing and caring for cloth diapers

OK, I know what you’re thinking… Cloth? Gross! Sure. But no more than any other diapers. The key is to deal with them quickly and not to let them pile up. There are several diapers bins designed specifically for cloth diapers, or you can just rinse them out immediately after use, hang them to dry over the side of the tub, then wash them in a batch of other diapers. Use a double rinse cycle if it makes you feel better, then dry them in your clothes dryer or hang them to dry. It’s not too much of a hassle, really. (tip: fasten the velcro on each diaper before washing – it will make washing/drying much easier!). More info about caring for cloth diapers.

Which diapers are better – cloth or disposable?

After 6 months of parenting, I can tell you this: Cloth diapers are great. We have only had one or two instances of leakage, which is about the same as what we have had with disposables. But we don’t use them exclusively. We typically use cloth diapers throughout the day, then use disposables at night, and anytime we plan on being away from the house for an extended period of time – especially overnight trips. We have no desire to carry dirty diapers with us, and asking friends or relatives to use their washing machine to wash dirty diapers probably isn’t the most polite thing in the world. Which is better? I think they are both great and I encourage you to try cloth if you have young children. The cost and environmental benefits will make it worth your while. Then use disposable diapers for what they were intended for: a convenience.

And you thought buying Christmas presents was hard. How about this challenge – what do you do with a Christmas gift you don’t want?

First, I hope you were able to grit your teeth, form a fake smile and manage at least a pleasant ‘thank you’ when you opened the gift.

Should You Keep The Gift Or Get Rid Of It?

To keep or not to keep – that is the question. Whether ‘tis nobler to hold an unwanted gift or to dispose of it. Here are a few questions to consider:

What is your relationship like with the gift giver?

If it’s a close friend, surely they would understand if you told them that you were allergic to candle scents and wanted to buy something else instead. If, on the other hand, your mother-in-law gives you a plant that has been in the family for generations, you might need to put it in a visible place in the living room – even if you don’t like it. Sometimes the best idea is to just ask the gift giver – “Hey, this doesn’t fit. Would it be alright with you if I got something else?”

Did you get a gift receipt?

A gift receipt is your green light to return a gift. The gift receipt is the giver’s way of saying – “if there is something else you want, I’d like you to get it”.

Will it damage a relationship?

If someone is going to be upset at you for returning a gift, then even if you will never, never, ever use it – keep it. The relationship means more than an unwanted gift. In a year or so, you can feel free to donate it to your favorite charity.

6 Ways To Get Rid of Unwanted Gifts

1. Sell it on ebay or Craigslist. You can sell everything on ebay and with a quick introduction to a few money making ebay strategies you will be well on your way to having a pocket full of cash instead of an unwanted gift (or even a duplicate).

2. Regift. Re-gifting may be controversial, but there is one way you can regift that will never be questioned – don’t get caught. Remember, you can even hang on to the gift for a few months till someone else has a birthday or other similar celebration. Here is a full guide on how to regift (it even has a strategy so you don’t get caught).

3. Of course, if it is a gift card you can follow these suggestions for selling gift cards. But, you might be looking for other creative options for trading, selling, and exchanging gift cards.

4. Donate it. If you ever feel overwhelmed by all your gifts at Christmas you could consider donating it to a local charity. The gift will certainly mean more to them than it will to your closet. Why let something gather mothballs when it can be used?

5. Return it. Around the holidays most companies have fairly liberal return policies. If you don’t have a receipt but you do have a tag, you can often politely request to exchange the product for something else. Of course, returning it is simplified if you have a gift receipt.

6. Be negligent. Accidentally leave it somewhere that you know the dog will eat it.

What do you say if someone asks you about the gift later?

I have this personal integrity policy that makes this question simple for me. My policy is this – I don’t lie. While I’m sure you could come up with some creative lies, I think the truth presented with a little icing on top is the best approach.

What gift did you get that you plan to get rid of? How will you unload the gift? Any other ways to get rid of unwanted gifts?

‘Tis the season for holiday parties, gifts and extravagant feasts. How can you and your family enjoy the holidays without suffering the inevitable New Year lament? Start a new holiday tradition of saving money. Try the tips below to plan a fun, family-oriented holiday celebration that will not only save you money, but also get the whole family involved.

Do a holiday gift swap with friends: Gather toys and clothes that are in great condition but that your kids have outgrown or stopped using. Make sure to clean and sanitize them then swap them with friends to give to your kids. Many kids, especially little ones, won’t care or even realize the toy isn’t brand new.

Send an e-card: Create a video holiday card. Instead of spending the money on buying and mailing all of those holiday cards, create a fun, short video and upload it to YouTube. Send the link around to your friends. It’s a great use for the video camera you received two holidays ago and your friends and family will be thrilled! Not to mention, it’s a great project for the little ones while they’re home on winter vacation.

Check your shopping list twice:

Just because a gift item is on sale doesn’t mean that you’ll save money. Be sure to do price comparisons between brands and stores, and don’t forget to check online.

Always be sure to take into account taxes, shipping fees, or baggage fees if booking a plane ticket before making your decision. [See: Save Money on Airline Tickets, and How to Get the Best Deal with Priceline for more money saving travel tips].

Most of all, make sure your kids actually want the gift – there’s no use in buying something 25 percent off if they won’t even use it!

By including your children in the decision making this holiday season, you’ll not only save money, but begin teaching them lifelong lessons in financial literacy and responsible decision making. For tips on how to talk to your kids about savings year-round, explore the free online resource for parents called Junior Achievement $ave, USA. The lessons are sponsored by The Allstate Foundation and can serve as a great learning tool for children, teens and parents.

Spotting a good timely deal is a nice way to save a bit of money. The main things to remember here are that: (1) being fast is essential (you can win some points by being the first at sharing a deal at web forums and communities) and (2) a deal doesn’t mean you need to buy the product.

The latter point reflects my long-time observations that a person that discovers a deal feels like buying the item even if he actually doesn’t need one. That’s a wide-spread issue with couponing which turns bargain hunting into a money-spending process rather than a money-saving one.

My post below attempts to deal with both of the points:

It lists tools that alert you instantly of a deal and thus allows you to be one of the first to share it;

It lists tools that allow to customize alerts and thus track only those deals you need (ignoring all the rest).

So let’s take a look at the tools:

1. Trackle

Trackle is a nice web service, that among other features, also offers you to track any product price and coupons and sends instant SMS alert:

1. First, you will need to register at the site and enable mobile notifications by going to your account:

2. A confirmation code will be sent to your mobile phone for you to provide it on the site;

3. Then go to “Shopping Catalog” and click Add next to “Trackle Coupons” line.

4. Filter your Tricklet by Category, zip code or product name and enable “Instant SMS”:

You are done!

2. Buxr and Gtalk

Buxr is a user-contributed coupon codes and deals resource that offers members to create customized email alerts based on the set of parameters.

The store name (or “All”);

Type of a deal (product, coupon, sale or all);

A key phrase:

It sends you an email alert once a deal relevant to your settings is shared on the site. The notification email looks like this:

If you have Gtalk installed (with the same email you subscribed to Buxr), you’ll be instantly notified by Gtalk that you have new mail from Buxr.

1. Twitter and Seesmic

Seesmic is a desktop application (you’ll need to install Adobe AIR to use it) that can be used to make search and monitor Twitter. The process of configuring the alert looks like this:

1. Install Seesmic and configure it to instantly alert you of new search results:

2. Search inside Seesmic for the deals you are interested in:

Your search will be saved automatically (you can see it in the side pane and delete it from there);

3. Until you delete the search, you will be updated by Seesmic once new Tweets relevant to your search query appear. The alerts will be in for of a small pop-up window in the lower-right corner of your computer screen:

Any other ways to be instantly alerted of targeted deals? Share them in the comments!

I will be at home on Black Friday, spending some well earned time off with my family. I’m well aware of the “deals” that will be out there, and there will surely be big savings on some items. But I can’t look forward to spending hours in line or dealing with the masses so I can save a few bucks on some electronics or seasonal gifts.

The Frenzy that is Black Friday

I’m all about saving money. I do my research on major purchases – compare item specs, read product reviews, visit comparison sites, clip coupons, and use a cash back credit card to save an extra percentage point or two (and pay it in full the next month).

But Black Friday Deals exist for one reason alone – to get people into the stores. From there, the marketers know that the frenzy of the season and competition of other shoppers will spur people to grab items and not set them back down for fear they won’t be able to find another deal just as good as the one they have in their hands. There is also the sunk cost mentality of the day. Many people who spend hours in line and fight the crowds won’t be willing to admit they don’t need anything and leave the store empty handed.

Why I will be home on Black Friday

For me, the holidays are about catching up with my rest and spend some quality time with my family. Black Friday is no different. These are the reasons I will be at home this Friday, spending time with my loved ones.

Time. Many people camp overnight to be near the front of the line when the stores open on Friday. Sure, some people make it a family event, but that’s not my idea of quality family time. Add in the time waiting in lines, and pushing through the crowds to find some deals and you can waste half a day visiting two stores.

Crowds. Something about saving money brings out the worst in some people. The mob mentality kicks in and some people go on the offensive, pushing, pulling, grabbing, etc. The unthinkable happened last year and a seasonal worker at Wal-Mart was trampled to death, all in the name of saving a few bucks. Now I’m not worried about being trampled to death, I can always move to the back of the line and avoid the throngs. But I prefer shopping without being pushed about, bumped into, etc.

Limited quantities. Almost every store flier for Black Friday lists “limited quantities” in the fine print under the most popular products or the steepest price discounts. The limits are often as low as one or two per store, so unless you are one of the first few people in line and are willing to run through the store to find that product, you aren’t going to get it. Most stores don’t offer rain checks either, so if you miss out, your time was wasted. You can read more about this at CNN.

The “non-deal” specials. Many stores advertise basement bottom prices on select items and use those deals to get people in the door where you may find many items that aren’t discounted at all. If you go out on Black Friday, make sure you know the regular sale prices as well as the Black Friday specials. Sometimes they aren’t that different.

If you go…

I’m not planning on venturing out on Black Friday, but if you plan on going out, then be prepared and have a plan. Here is a recent article about Shopping Responsibly on Black Friday with some more helpful links at the end. Have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving.

What are you doing Black Friday?

Black Friday is right around the corner, which means lots of crowds and big savings. Now is the time to start planning – not necessarily for the deals you will seek, but how to shop responsibly.

Shopping responsibly on Black Friday

Set a budget. It’s easy to get swept away in the spur of the moment by all the “deals” you will find on Black Friday. But you aren’t really saving money unless you were planning on buying that item at a higher price. Make a list, set a budget, and avoid overspending this holiday season.

Plan your shopping trip in advance. This goes hand in hand with your budget. Make a “to buy” list and a “wish list” and only fill the “wish list” after you fill your “to buy” list, and only if you have room in your budget. It also helps to plan which stores you will visit and when.

Determine if the deals are really deals. Most stores only have limited numbers of the premium items, so your best chance at getting the doorbuster deal that you want is to get there early – sometimes hours before the store opens so you can be first in line. If your time is worth the savings and inconvenience of waiting several hours in line, then the deal is worth it. Be sure to factor in your time when deciding how much money you are actually saving.

Use credit cards wisely. To avoid high interest finance charges, don’t spend more than you can pay off this month. The best rule of thumb is that if you can’t afford to buy it in cash, don’t put in on your credit card.

Watch out for store credit card promotions. Saving 10% on your first purchase sounds like a great deal, but not all credit cards are created equally. Opening store credit cards can actually be worse than opening a standard credit card – they count differently against your credit score and they often come with higher interest rates, making them a more expensive long term option if you don’t pay them off immediately. Instead, consider using cash rewards credit cards, which are often a much better deal than store credit cards. Some of them even offer cash bonuses for new accounts, which are often worth more than the 10% you might get for signing up for a store credit card.

Shop online. If you prefer to avoid the crowds on Black Friday, then you can do your shopping online (this is my preference). You may miss out on some of the “doorbuster deals” if you shop online, but you probably wouldn’t have been able to get them anyway unless you were willing to stand inline for hours before the store opened. Again, shop with a budget and avoid putting too much on your credit cards. A good way to avoid credit card debt is to shop online without a credit card. You can pay for your online shopping through your bank account with eBillme, and you even get a 1% rebate on future purchases. It’s similar to a rewards credit card, without the credit card.

Have fun and remember the reason of the season. Black Friday can be a busy and stressful day. So take a step back and remember why we celebrate the Christmas season.

I bought an iPod Touch last week and one of the first apps I downloaded from the iTunes store was the Amazon Kindle app, which allows you to sync your Amazon Kindle and your iPod Touch or iPhone. If you don’t have a Kindle, you can use your Touch or iPhone as a reader.

I borrow most of the books I read from the library, but there are times when I want to take a book with me when I travel, so this feature comes in handy. A kindle can also come in handy if you want to keep a book and reread it or use it for reference.

I wanted to try out the Kindle App on my iPod Touch, but I didn’t want to spend $10 on a book if I didn’t enjoy the reading experience (most best sellers are $9.99 at Amazon). So I looked for some free books to try it out. Most of the free books are older books where the copyright has expired, but there are some new books as well. I downloaded a couple collections of short stories and other books to try it out, and while reading a book on the iPod Touch is not the same as reading a paperback book, or even a Kindle because of the smaller screen, it is a convenient way of carrying around multiple books. I read a couple stories from the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and downloaded the Bible for reference and I enjoyed it enough to download a few more books.

Free Books for the Amazon Kindle

You can download books for the Kindle from many places, but the most convenient location is from Amazon because you can order with one click and have it automatically uploaded to your Kindle, iPod, or iPhone the next time you have access to wi-fi service. The following list is of free Kindle books you can download directly from Amazon (Amazon features multiple selections for many of these authors).

A short selection of free classics on the Kindle:

Wow! Creating this list brought back memories of high school lit classes… Not sure if that is a good thing or not! There are hundreds of more free books for the Kindle, especially if you are willing to search from a site other than Amazon.com. There are thousands of books that only cost a dollar or two, so you can create an impressive library with a small amount of money.

Other places to get free books for the Kindle.

Again, I listed these books from Amazon because you can download it almost instantly to your Kindle, iPod Touch, or iPhone the next time you sign on. You will need to manually upload books from other sources. Some other great places to find free books that are compatible with the Kindle include Project Gutenberg (nearly 30,000 free titles), FreeKindleBooks.org, Fictionwise (A Barnes & Noble company, 43 titles),
