Earlier this year, Congress passed the Credit CARD Act of 2009 to standardize several aspects of the credit card industry. Changes include restricting the type and number of fees credit card companies can charge, increased transparency regarding interest rates and rate changes, standardized billing rules, and limiting the ability for some young people to qualify for credit cards based on age. The new laws are one reason why I think it can be a good idea for students to get a credit card (provided the students can manage credit cards responsibly, of course).

Credit CARD Act date moving up?

The Credit CARD Act of 2009 was scheduled to go into effect in February 22, 2010, but the Wall Street Journal is reporting that members of Congress are going to push for that date to be moved up to December 1, 2009. The new date is in response to many credit card companies making a slew of changes in advance of the new laws going into effect.

Who the Credit CARD Act affects

These changes affect everyone that has a credit card account, but it will affect people differently. People who pay their credit card balance in full each month and never carry a balance probably won’t notice much change. But if you carry a balance on your credit card, then you will likely see some affects when the new laws go active, if not sooner.

What changes will we see?

New terms, additional fees, higher interest rates, and decreased benefits. If you have a credit card, I’m sure you’ve already seen some changes in recent months. My wife and I have a total of 8 credit cards between the two of us and my business. The credit card companies representing those cards have sent us new terms for 7 of our 8 credit cards. Some of the new terms include increased rates for balance transfers, increased cash advance rates, higher interest rates, variable interest rates instead of fixed interest rates, and decreased benefits (say goodbye to automatic travel insurance and other perks).

Read the fine print. One card company recently decided to automatically “upgrade” my cash rewards credit card to their new points reward credit card if I didn’t call them to keep my old terms. What they didn’t want me to notice was that the new credit card accrues rewards at a lower rate. Of course they made it sound like they were “upgrading” me when they were actually looking to decrease my benefits. I declined the “upgrade” and kept my old card.

What to do if your credit card company changes your terms

If your credit card company makes a change to your terms, you have the option to accept or decline the changes. However, if you decline the new offer, the credit card company will then close your credit card and you will no longer be able to make new charges with it. You will also still owe them the remaining balance on your card, at the same terms you had when the account was closed.

Closing credit cards can affect your credit score. You need to be careful about closing credit cards though, because it can possibly cause a decrease in your credit score because it lowers your average age of credit as well as your available credit – two important factors in determining your FICO credit score.

If you are trying to keep your credit score up, then you may find it is better to accept the new terms and either deal with the higher interest rates or apply for a 0% balance transfer credit card to move your credit card balance to a new card with no interest.

The Credit CARD Act is not all bad

I highlighted some of the negative changes because those are the changes consumers need to be aware of and watch out for. But there are also benefits to the Credit CARD Acot of 2009. Some of the positive changes include eliminating universal default, standardizing due dates and billing notices, requiring credit card companies give 45 days notice before increasing rates, and requiring consumers to opt in to allow overdraft charges (vs. having your card declined).

Read your mail. If you own a credit card, chances are very good that you will see some new terms in the near future, if you haven’t already. Be sure to read the fine print and make an educated decision based on your situation.

Not long ago credit card companies were competing for any business they could get, which was a good thing for consumers. It was easy to find 12 month (or better) 0% balance transfer offers, credit card sign up bonuses, and generous credit card rewards programs. Unfortunately, the credit card industry has taken a hit lately, which means many of the great deals that were available only a year ago are gone. But the economy is making a turn for the better and it looks like some of the more generous credit card programs may be making a comeback.

12 Month 0% Balance Transfer Offer – Discover More American Flag Card

Discover just announced they are again offering a 12 month 0% balance transfer credit card – the Discover More American Flag Card. Discover offers several variations of the Discover More Card, but they are only offering the 12 month 0% balance transfer offer on the Discover More American Flag version of the card (the other cards continue to offer a 6 month 0% interest balance transfer). This is one of the few cards of any brand that even offers a 0% balance transfer offer for 12 months.

0% balance transfer credit cards. The Discover More Card is not the only 0% balance transfer credit card available to consumers. Check out the top rated 0% balance transfer credit cards for more information.

Discover More American Flag Card features

The Discover More American Flag Card offers the same features as the other Discover More cards, the only exception being the 12 month 0% balance transfer offer instead of 6 months. The Discover More card is one of the best cash rewards credit cards currently on the market, offering up to 5% cash back on purchases, 0% interest on purchases for the first 6 months, and no annual fees. Here are some more details:

5% Cashback Bonus® in categories like travel, home, gas, restaurants, movies and more

5% to 20% Cashback Bonus at top online retailers

Up to 1% Cashback Bonus on all other purchases automatically

Unlimited cash rewards

Increase, even double, your rewards when you redeem for gift cards from our 100 Cashback Bonus Partners

0% Intro APR for 6 months on Purchases, and up to 12 months on Balance Transfers*

Apply for the Discover More American Flag Card.

Using the Discover More Card for a 0% Balance Transfer

Transferring your credit card balance to a 0% interest balance transfer offer can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in interest payments while you repay your credit card debt. To take advantage of this offer you simply need to fill out a few extra fields on your Discover Card application. But be sure to read the fine print. A six month balance transfer comes with a 3% balance transfer fee, and a 12 month 0% balance transfer comes with a 5% fee. While these fees weren’t common a year ago, they can still save you a lot of money over the long run (5% is much better than 20%+!).
How to evaluate 0% balance transfer credit card offers

Not all offers are created equally, as you will see below. You will want to evaluate each card individually and make sure you understand the credit card offer. Some important things to look out for include:

Duration of balance transfer offer. Most cards offer 6 – 12 months at 0%.

Balance transfer fees. Most fees range from 0% – 3%, or a fixed price, such as $75.

Interest rate. This only matters if you plan on using the card after you pay off your balance.

Rewards and cash back. Depending on your needs, you may want to consider credit cards with sign up bonuses, rewards bonuses, cash back cards, points cards, or special features, such as travel cards or gas rebates.

It also offers 1% cash back on almost all other purchases, making this card not only one of the best balance transfer cards on the market, but one of the best cash rewards credit cards on the market. The main difference between the Discover More American Flag Card and the other Discover More Cards is the length of the transfer term and the fees. The term is good for 12 months and the fee is 5%. If you can eliminate your credit card debt in less than 6 months, than the Discover More Card at 3% balance transfer fee is a better offer. Otherwise, go for the longer term. Sign up for the Discover More American Flag Card.

The Discover Business Card is currently offering new cardholders a $100 bonus for spending $1,000 within the first 3 months you have your account. Unfortunately, that Cashback bonus is coming to an end, and will no longer be available after December 31st. If you need a new credit card and would like to take advantage of the $100 bonus, now is the best time to do that.

I give the Discover Business Card my stamp of approval. I currently use the Discover Business Card for my business related expenses and have been very happy with it so far.

I recently purchased a new Dell laptop for my business, which combined with my other expenditures put me over the $1,000 threshold, qualifying me for the $100 Cashback Bonus. The Discover Business Card also offers cash back on regular purchases, and special offers for shopping through Discover’s Exclusive Online Shopping Site.

Don’t have a small business? You don’t need one! Anyone can sign up for a business card. All you need to do is use your SSN for the Business ID number.

Discover Business Card Bonus Details

** Earn a $100 Cashback Bonus® when you make $1000 in purchases within 3 months after your account is opened. Offer valid for new accounts only. See Cashback Bonus® Terms and Conditions for full details.

Those rewards make the Discover More Card one of the best cash back rewards cards available.
Discover Open Road Card – top gas rewards card

The Discover Open Road Card is another great Discover card, and is one of the best gas rewards cards on the market.

Ever wonder why credit card companies offer different versions of the same credit card? And what’s the difference between gold and platinum anyway… prestige and bragging rights? Not really. No one cares about the credit card in your wallet unless it is the American Express Centurion Card, and then people only care because they are superficial or they think you’re silly for spending several grand in annual fees. But I digress… The short answer is the difference between the green, gold, and platinum cards is service and benefits.

American Express Green, Gold, and Platinum Benefits

The main benefit of these cards is the service and perks they provide. There are many common features among them, and some that are exclusive to a particular card, such as the Gold Card events or the concierge service available only to American Express® Platinum Card holders.

Membership Rewards program. These cards all come with free membership to the Membership Rewards program for no additional fee. Cardholders earn one point per dollar spent on all purchases, and the rewards can be redeemed for gift cards, items, or transferred to airline or hotel miles. There is no limit to the amount of points that can be earned, and points never expire.

Here are just some of the perks you expect with these cards (click on the picture of the card for more benefit details).

Sign-Up Bonuses for American Express Cards

These American Express Cards each come with a sign up bonus.

Preferred Rewards Green Card – Earn 5,000 Membership Rewards® Bonus Points When You Spend $500 in 3 Months – Redeemable for a $50 Gift

Preferred Rewards Gold Card – Earn 10,000 Membership Rewards® Bonus Points When You Spend $500 in 3 Months – Redeemable for a $100 Gift

American Express® Platinum – 25,000 Membership Rewards® Bonus Points When You Spend $1,000 in 3 Months – Redeemable for One Domestic Round-Trip Airline Ticket.

Fees

These American Express cards offer generous benefits, but they come at a price. Each of these cards carries an annual fee (waived for the first year for Green and Gold). Annual fees are never fun, but they are typically easy to negotiate and often earn the card holder rewards points upon renewal. I recently renewed my American Express Business Gold Card and received 10,000 bonus points for renewal. This is equivalent to a $100 gift card. The renewal fee was $125. To make the renewal decision, I only had to ask myself if carrying the card was worth paying $25 for the next year. The Green Card carries a $95 renewal fee, and the Platinum Card has an annual fee of $450.

Who Should Use These American Express Cards

These three cards are charge cards not credit credit cards, which means the bill must be paid in full each month. The target audience for these cards is a person who regularly spends a lot of money each month, has the ability to pay the bill in full, and wants to take advantage of the excellent benefits and services – particularly those of the Gold and Platinum Cards. The higher annual fees make the Gold and Platinum Cards a better deal for those who will take advantage of the many services and discounts and plan to spend several thousand dollars a month with their card.

Rising gas prices are affecting everyone across the country. Even if you don’t drive very often, high fuel costs are causing price increases for food and other commodities. Even though gas prices are affecting many aspects of our economy, anyone can save money on gas if they shop smartly. One of the best ways to do that is with a gas rewards card.

Most of these cards listed will earn you 3-5% cash back on gas purchases. With gas prices sitting around $4 per gallon in much of the US, that equals a savings of $0.12-0.20 per gallon, or a couple dollars per fill up. Most of these cards also offer additional cash back on other purchases as well, including grocery stores, restaurants, travel, and more. Using these gas rewards cards can easily save people several hundred dollars per year.

Keep in mind that while some of these cards are business credit cards, anyone can apply for a business credit card.

The best gas credit cards: rewards and cash back

Discover More Card

My wife has the Discover More Card and we have been very pleased with it so far. You earn 5% to 20% Cashback Bonus at Top Online Retailers, 1% cash back on other purchases, and there are other cash back rewards for reaching certain spending plateaus. The Discover More Card also comes with a $50 bonus after you spend $599 within your first 3 billing cycles. There is no annual fee. Click here to open a Discover More Card.

Chase Freedom

The Chase Freedom(SM) Card offers $50 Cash Back after your first purchase, 1% Cash Back on every purchase, up to 3% Cash Back on rotating categories such as gas, home improvement stores, groceries, etc., and a 0% introductory balance transfer offer. There is no annual fee for this card. Click here to apply for Chase Freedom.

TrueEarnings Card from Costco and American Express

Like the Blue Cash Credit Card from American Express, there are both business and standard versions of this card. The TrueEarnings Business Card is much better for gas than it’s non-business counterpart, but let’s look at them both though, and you decide which is a better overall option for you.

The TrueEarnings Business Card from Costco and American Express offers 5% cash back for gas purchases, 3% for eating out, 2% for travel purchases, and 1% for virtually everything else, including Costco. There is no annual fee for Costco members and no fee for additional cards. There are also several other categories that can earn you additional cash rewards.

The TrueEarnings Card from Costco and American Express offers 3% cash back for gas purchases, 3% for restaurants, 2% for travel purchases, and 1% everything else, including Costco. There is also a $25 Statement Credit with Your First Purchase with the card. The TrueEarnings Card Serves as Both Your American Express Credit Card and Your Costco Membership Card. Basically, the only difference is 3% cash back on gas vs. 5% cash back on gas.

SimplyCash Business Card from American Express

This is another business card that anyone can apply for. The SimplyCash Business Card from American Express offers 3% cash back on gas (up to the first $12,000; 1% thereafter) and has no annual fee. makes this a very nice card to carry around in your wallet. Additional cash back rewards include 5% cash back for wireless services and office supplies, and 1% on almost all other purchases. There are no limits to the amount of cash back you can earn. There is also a 0% Introductory APR for up to 12 Months for those interested in transferring a balance.
Blue Cash for Business Credit Card and Blue Cash from American Express

Depending on how much money you spend with your credit cards every year, this may be the best cash rewards credit card out there. For the first $6500 in annual purchases, Blue Cash customers receive 1% cash back at gas stations, grocery stores, and drugstores, and 0.5% everywhere else. For purchases above the $6500 threshold, Blue Cash customers receive 5% cash back on gas, grocery, and drugstore purchases and 1.5% on everything else. Another great thing about this card is that there is no limit on the amount of rewards you can earn and there is no annual fee. This card comes in two varieties: The Blue Cash for Business Credit Card, and the Blue Cash from American Express. Both offer great benefits, but the Blue Cash for Business Credit Card offers a few more cash back options for things like travel, rental cars, FedEx, and more.

Store brand cards and credit unions

There are dozens of store brand cards available that offer cash back or discounts, but I didn’t list those here. Some of them only offer $.05 off per gallon which is just over 1%, and very few of them can be used at locations other than gas stations, and usually don’t offer cash back if they can be used elsewhere. you may also be able to find a great deal with your credit union if you belong to one. Be sure to shop around.

Credit cards are great tools when used correctly. I pay my credit card bill monthly and I enjoy the cash back rewards programs credit cards companies have to offer. Use your cards responsibly, and reap the benefits.

Do you know of any better deals?

A lot of people don’t know this, but anyone can apply for a business credit card, even if they don’t own a “business.” All you have to do is use select “sole proprietor” as your business type, use your name as the business name, and use your Social Security Number as the tax ID number.

Who can be a sole proprietor? Anyone can claim to be a sole proprietor, which is the most basic type of business recognized by the IRS. According to the IRS, “A sole proprietor is someone who owns an unincorporated business by himself or herself.” This means that anything you do can be considered a business. This can include selling things on Ebay, holding garage sales, babysitting, freelance work, consulting, coaching, or anything else.

Even though a sole proprietorship is a legal business, there are no formal requirements such as paperwork or registration fees for starting a sole proprietorship. The only qualification to be a sole proprietor is to claim you are a sole proprietor. It’s as easy as that.

Note: It’s important to understand that with a sole proprietorship, there is no legal separation between you and your business. Your business and personal debts are considered the same.

Why business cards can be good for individuals

If you apply for a business credit card as a sole proprietor, you can use it for personal use as well. Some business credit cards are actually better than a card offered by the same company and branded with the same name.

Here are some of the reasons business credit cards can be good for individuals:

Better rewards and bonuses. Credit card companies know that most businesses charge more every month than individual customers and are often more profitable. This means the competition is fierce and credit card companies will do what it takes to recruit new customers. This works in your favor as they often have better cash back and rewards programs, and sign up bonuses to attract new customers.

Higher credit limits. Many business credit cards offer higher credit limits compared cards issued to individuals, because businesses often take in and spend more money than individuals. Why is a higher credit limit good for an individual? Because your credit score is determined using a formula that includes credit utilization (how much of your available credit you use). A higher credit limit can raise your credit score.

Balance transfers and 0% introductory offers. A lot of people use balance transfer offers to take advantage of credit card arbitrage (paying 0% interest on money borrowed from credit card companies). This can be a profitable enterprise. Others like to take advantage of 0% introductory offers so they can go out and charge some startup costs and pay them off over time without paying interest. When used correctly, these actions can either make or save you a lot of money.

Anyone can sign up for a business credit card

I applied for my first business credit card as a sole proprietorship, soon after starting this site. I later formed an LLC to make it easier to separate my expenses and I later signed up for another business credit card under my LLC. I currently use the The AmEx Gold Card and a Discover Business Card.

Why is the Chase Freedom card such a great deal? Two words: Free Money! I’ve had my Chase Freedom card for about 2 months now and I have already made over $70 with it, and I will make another $150 this month! I love credit card sign up bonuses!

The Chase Freedom card comes with a $50 sign up bonus after your first purchase and gives you 3% cash back in three rotating categories. All other purchases earn you 1% cash back.

Chase Freedom rewards credit card

The cash back option for the Chase Freedom card is somewhat different from other rewards credit cards. You get 1% cash back on all purchases, and 3% cash back in rotating categories, such as gas, groceries, home improvement stores, department stores and more. This makes the Chase Freedom one of the best gas credit cards. You can also earn 10 – 20% cash back when you use your Chase Freedom card to shop online at Chase’s Ultimate Rewards Mall.

0% introductory offer: The Chase Freedom comes with a 0% intro APR on purchases for up to 12 months, based on your credit history.

0% balance transfer: While it is not listed as a balance transfer credit card, you may be able to do a balance transfer with this card when you sign up, depending on your credit history.

Other great reasons to get the Chase Freedom Card

I originally signed up for the card when I learned about the free groceries deal that several grocery chains are offering to entice people to spend their economic stimulus checks at their stores last year. Through the deal I was able to get $120 in free groceries, plus the $50 sign-up bonus for the Chase card, plus $36 cash back on the groceries I purchased. Yes, I had to purchase $1200 worth of groceries, but this was money I would spend anyway, and I received enough cash back to make it worth my time. I also pay every credit card bill in full, so I won’t have to pay any interest on my charges.

Even without the $50 sign up bonus, this is a great card!
