Ryan, thanks for the info here; as to be honest with you, I'm very uninformed when it comes to a lot of this stuff. I figure it's better to educate myself early instead of waiting until it's too late!

Excellent comment about investing in index funds with low expense ratios. To me, this is the great advantage of rolling over your 401k to an IRA. Most 401k plans have much higher management fees than you might find on your own by shopping the marketplace. A few tenths of a point per year in saved management fees can equal a lot of money over the long-term.

Really? I don't think it sounds like gambling at all. Daytrading in your IRA is well, daytrading, and like short-term trading and gambling it's not a good idea. But the transfer doesn't sound anything like gambling.

I'd rather have several old 401(k)s rolled into one account than cash out (fees) or leave them scattered. Doesn't mean I won't still invest in the same things I invest in now.

The 401k to IRA transfer itself is no riskier than doing a bank transfer. Where and how you allocate your funds is determined by your risk tolerance and investment needs, but can be tailored to the same risk level, or lower, as you currently have in your 401k.

FS, Good advice for people who want to day trade in their IRA, which is allowed. Personally, I keep my IRAs in index funds, which track a segment of the market and offer lower expense ratios than managed mutual funds. This is a better option for me because I can control where I invest, and how much I pay in fees.

I've known many colleagues who've rolled over their 401Ks into IRAs and have traded themselves to death and blown themselves up.

Beware of this method! Only for the most disciplined!
