Tip’d – A New Social Media Site for Financial Topics

by Patrick on October 18, 2008

Earlier this week a new social media site was launched – enter Tip’d, a user based way to share financial news. I know, with Stumle Upon, Digg, PF Buzz, Reddit, Facebook, Propeller, and a host of others, what need is there for a new social media site? I was skeptical at first and didn’t want yet another drain on my time. But after looking into it, I decided to give Tip’d a shot because Tip’d fills a niche that the other social media sites don’t quite fill, though PZ Buzz comes very close.

Digg, Stumble Upon, and other social media sites have financial and business categories, but they are very broad and you never know what you are going to find. PF Buzz is a great source for personal finance articles, but is less focused on economics or business news. Tip’d is focused 100% on financial topics, with categories including commodities, currencies, economy, funds and ETFs, green, Personal Finance, Private Equity and VC, real estate, stocks, and tech. I’ve heard there is the possibility of adding more topics.

Tip’d is backed by a well known and capable group of internet personalities. These guys are building this site for lasting power, and I hope it is a success. Tip’d can only be good for people interested in personal finance and other financial topics.

Tip’d is for everyone. You don’t need to be a blogger to use Tip’d. Anyone who enjoys reading about financial news can use Tip’d.

Using Tip’d. Tip’d is very similar to Digg in it’s layout, so if you have experience using Digg, you’ll immediately understand how to use Tip’d. If you have never used either platform, it is very intuitive and you shouldn’t have any problems.

If you want to submit articles to Tip, you can see the submission button under my posts:

Tip it!

Tip’d only works with participation. Like all social media sites, the more people that use the site the more it acts as a community and the more enjoyable it is for everyone. So I plan on being active in the community and hope you will dop the same.

My verdict? Stumble Upon is my favorite social media site for a variety of interests and I like to go there to surf. PF Buzz is my favorite social media site for reading the best new personal finance articles, and Facebook is a great place to meet people. I’m going to start using Tip’d as a place to look for more news in the business and economic categories.

I’m really enjoying Tip’d’s ease of use even if its name is weird.

I’m still figuring it out, but so far, I like what I see.

It does look like a good resource. I really like Reddit. Recently they started letting you easily set up topic areas. I created an investing section, the number of subscribers to that section is low – which is a problem. But Reddit is a great platform so if more people join it can be another useful social source.

John: I’ve used Reddit, so I’ll be sure to check that out. Thanks for sharing.
