This weekend my wife and I went to a retirement party for one of her coworkers. It was a potluck, which is always a lot of fun. There were some outdoor games as well, including badminton. One of the guys there, a “know-it-all doctor type,” remarked how badminton shouldn’t even be considered a sport, much less be included in the Olympics. He even went so far as to say people who played badminton weren’t even considered athletes.
I don’t know if you’ve ever played badminton, but it is a lot more difficult than it looks, and the people who play it at an Olympic level are certainly athletes. My wife and I teamed up against the “doctor” and his wife and after a few minutes he remarked how the game really was a sport… because he was winded. LOL. In my opinion, the sports included in the Olympics are there for a reason. It takes many years of practice and dedication to reach that level of skill.
Congrats to all Olympic athletes from around the world. Representing their countries on an international stage is something to be immensely proud of. Win, lose, or draw, they are an inspiration to us all.
Blog Action Day. Blog Action Day is “an annual nonprofit event that aims to unite the world’s bloggers, podcasters and videocasters, to post about the same issue on the same day.” The goal of Blog Action Day is to raise awareness for a particular topic. Last year’s topic was the environment. This year’s topic is poverty. Bloggers from around the world will write on the topic of poverty on October 15th, 2008. As of this writing, there are over 1,800 bloggers with a combined 3 million readers. I expect there will be a lot of great articles that day, and a lot of discussion about poverty. If you are a blogger, I hope you will participate.

Men’s synchronized diving. Now that’s a sport!
Thanks for the mention.
I guess there will be a lot more activities that’s considered sport for that doctor — i.e., mowing lawn made him winded so it must be a sport.
I think it’s time for me to check out Blog Action Day. I haven’t got around to it yet.
Badminton is totally a real sport…as long as you don’t have to wear short-shorts and white polo shirts, it’s all good.
Thanks for the mention!
Your aquaintance if a fool. Badminton is a great game – and relatively cheap!
Yes, badminton is a sport, but I would say NASCAR isn’t – unless bladder control is a sport.
Thanks for including me in the roundup!
PT, I’ve been practicing it for years. Oh, and synchronized swimming, but that’s only for the ladies right now.
Pinyo, I’m excited about Blog Action day this year. I think it will be a good one.
David, they should make them wear the NBA uniforms, circa 1982.
Caveman, NASCAR takes a lot of talent… but I don’t much care for it either.
Thanks for the comments all.
Thanks for the link!
I watched an interview on the Olympics with some badminton players. Some of those guys serve the birdie at 200 miles per hour! That’s crazy. People who have never competed in particular sports have no idea of the strength and skill it takes. I used to horseback ride. People would joke around that it was only exercise for the horse, but it really takes a lot of stregth and balance, especially jumping.
I agree, Kristen. Horse riding is a workout!
Badminton, just like every other Olympic sport, takes a lot of skill and practice. I definitely consider them athletes!
Thanks for defending badminton. My country just won its first ever Olympic silver medal and it was in badminton singles.
It’s a sport and a tough one at that.
