Chase Freedom – A Great Rewards Credit Card

by Patrick on July 30, 2008

Why is the Chase Freedom card such a great deal? Two words: Free Money! I’ve had my Chase Freedom card for about 2 months now and I have already made over $70 with it, and I will make another $150 this month! I love credit card sign up bonuses!

The Chase Freedom card gives you 3% cash back in three rotating categories. All other purchases earn you 1% cash back. It used to offer a $50 sign up bonus, but it looks like that offer is gone for now.

The cash back option for the Chase Freedom card is somewhat different from other rewards credit cards. You get 1% cash back on all purchases, and 3% cash back in rotating categories, such as gas, groceries, home improvement stores, department stores and more. This makes the Chase Freedom one of the best gas credit cards. You can also earn 10 – 20% cash back when you use your Chase Freedom card to shop online at Chase’s Ultimate Rewards Mall.

0% introductory offer: The Chase Freedom comes with a 0% intro APR on purchases for up to 12 months, based on your credit history.

0% balance transfer: While it is not listed as a balance transfer credit card, you may be able to do a balance transfer with this card when you sign up, depending on your credit history.

Other great reasons to get the Chase Freedom Card

I originally signed up for the card when I learned about the free groceries deal that several grocery chains are offering to entice people to spend their economic stimulus checks at their stores last year. Through the deal I was able to get $120 in free groceries, plus the $50 bonus (when it was available), plus $36 cash back on the groceries I purchased. Yes, I had to purchase $1200 worth of groceries, but this was money I would spend anyway, and I received enough cash back to make it worth my time. I also pay every credit card bill in full, so I won’t have to pay any interest on my charges.

Even without the $50 sign up bonus, this is a great card!

*note: This card was formerly a Visa Card, but the Chase Freedom is now a MasterCard.

I already have this CC and love the 3 category auto-pick feature. I, however, always run into the maximum bonus payout of $60, or $20 per bonus category.

My question is, when you have 5 categories is the bonus cap upped to $100?

Hi Patrick,

From what I understand, the limit remains the same. This is a great card if you are not a big spender. If you spend a lot every month, then there are other cards like the AmEx Blue cash rewards card which may be better. I can help you locate a card if you like.

The other benefit from linking your Chase Freedom card to a Chase checking account is that it eliminates the rewards expiration (it currently expires after 3 years).

Hi Another Personal Finance Blog,

Yep, that is true as well. It will be a little while before I get there, but I’m looking forward to it. I love free money. ;)

I have also had this card for a few months. From what I understand, if you wait to redeem the cash rewards until you have accumulated $200, then they pitch in another $50 for a total of $250. I think I will get there next month.

Yep, I get that extra $50 every two or three months.

This is the WORST card I have ever owned. The customer service is very arrogant and rude. Talk to the card holder like trash like you are begging for their mercy to get their money. Though I always pay on time and cover beyond the total amount I have to pay at that moment. They are not flexible and try to squeeze the blood from the crab. Please do not use this card. Use Citibank, American Express or Discover card, they have better service and kindly understand customers. I owned this card more than a year but just delay my due date payment one day due to my financial institution discrepancy, they even not waive your late fee. They have made tons of fee from my purchase but they willlose more than they think because we will never ever use CHASE CARD including my friends, relatives…etc.

Sorry to hear about your experience, Peter. I’ve never had a problem with my card, but it has been some time since I have called customer service.
