Don,

Thanks for leaving the comment. The answer took more than I could write in a quick response in the comments section or an e-mail, so I formed the response as an article here on my site: Improve Your Career With Sales and Marketing Skills.

I hope this answers your question.

I'd love to hear some suggestions on how to learn sales and marketing. This was the section that really jumped out at me in reading this article, and I have known for a long time that it was a weak spot for me. Right now, I think that it is holding back my career in several ways.

There are two types of people- the quick and the dead. The best thing that I got from college is that I have to keep on learning and updating my knowledge.
I enjoyed the article Shark Investor. What you are writing about has also been mentioned by the wealthies person of our time- Warren Buffett.

Nearly all the skills I've learned in my business have come after I got out of college. I'm glad that I went, and education is important, but there is so much you can really teach yourself if you put the effort in.

Awhile back I was getting down on myself for how much time I was spending online doing research. It felt like I was just dinking around, but really I was learning a TON. There is so much great content online that is available for free.

From personal finance advice to learning a second language, it's amazing how much access to free knowledge we have with the internet.

I learned personal finance in school. It did me no good. :) I think I would have been better learning it at home, but I was kept out of financial decisions. Embarrassingly enough, I didn't really learn anything until I started teaching it!

I love the idea of investing in yourself! Great post.

Thanks for the comments, mates.
KMC, exactly this is the problem - at schools and universities we are taught a lot of specific skills which quickly lose values. The more important skills we need to learn ourselves

Unfortunately, new skills can also become devalued. Examples abound. I understand the point is to educate yourself on topics of general use (e.g. public speaking), but these are limited and more specialized skills also have risk.

Eric,

I've always been a big proponent of self-improvement as well. I took classes while I was in the USAF and getting my degree was one of the best things I could have done. I have been able to advance professionally and build a career instead of focusing on treading water after separating from the military.

Good luck on your goals of improving your writing and Spanish skills!

Mark,

I don't know when school systems will start teaching personal finance topics. I think they should, but hen again, I'm not sure how interested I would have been in high school - especially since I was only earning part time money then.

I totally agree. We do not teach financial principles in schools. We are not helping our students or society by not teaching these principles. When is the light bulb going to go off that says we need to teach strong financial habits?
