I have heard that it can take some time before Google will recognize newer sites as often as they do larger sites, and there may be some value to that statement, I am not sure. But, I do know it takes a long time to build up a substantial set of archives and build networks, which help your site get noticed more often. There are other ways such as being incredibly talented and getting noticed early on by sites that can drive a lot of traffic your way.
