How to Blow $750,000 - Destroy the Record Breaking Home Run Ball
By Patrick on Sep 17, 2007 in Fun Money
The record breaking home run ball that Barry Bonds hit last month to break Hank Aaron’s 33 year old home run record was sold at auction this weekend for over $750,000.
Fashion designer Mark Ecko revealed today he was the winning bidder of the infamous baseball and has disclosed his plans - let the public decide what will happen. He set up a website to let the world vote on three options:
- Bestow it: Give the ball to Cooperstown. The ball that broke Hank Aaron’s home run record belong’s in the Hall of Fame.
- Brand it: Burn an asterisk into the baseball with a branding iron, adding a permanent footnote to the record. Then, send it to Cooperstown.
- Banish it: Put the ball on a rocket ship and launch it into orbit, a moon shot for the ages. Out of sight, out of mind.
Is this the best use of $750,ooo? Maybe not. But I think it’s a great PR stunt.
Voting ends September 25th, so be sure to get your vote in soon! I have done my civic duty and voted. Have you?
PS: Leave a comment stating what you voted and why. No holds barred, but I reserve the right to edit naughty words.
Though I have no proof of any wrongdoing on Bonds’ part, I voted option #2.

That is fantastic, I voted for #3. But I would like to see #4 - Give ball back to Barry, but ball will have to be officially retrieved by a proctologist.

LOL. Ouch!
I voted 2. I would rather the ball be displayed for posterity’s sake with a big fat asterisk!

As far as an investment- it doesn’t seem like something worth holding onto. For one, the obvious questions of worthiness. More importantly, though, is the fact that Alex Rodriguez is going to eventually surpass him anyway (by a lot).
Therefore, I voted to brand the ball with the asterisk even if only for the symbolic significance of such an act.

Means No Cents, I agree 100%. A-Rod appears to be heir apparent to the throne, and I couldn’t be happier. The other thing to consider: This isn’t even the final home run record, it is only the record. Each time Bonds hits another HR, he breaks his own record. Now we have to ask, How much will the final home run record baseball be worth?

thanks for keeping us updated about this - I would love to have the ball, but I think I could have found a better use for 3/4 million dollars

I think he’s getting a good $750,000 worth of publicity out of it, so I wouldn’t say he’s blown the money.

Lazy Man,
It looks like this publicity will last a long time. I just heard the ball will be branded and donated - I know it’s old news, but I’ve been out of the country w/out internet access
I’m guessing the HOF will display the ball, and probably a little narrative about how and why it was donated. If so, his name will stay with the ball forever. That’s great publicity!
