Therein lies the problem, Mark. The hottest cards will always be sought after, and the rest are worthless (to most people). My favorites would likely be the hottest, and of course all the cards I got signed. Since I wouldn't get much for the common cards, it is probably not worth my time to sell them. I would rather pass them on to my kids. I'm not worried about the value increasing or decreasing - only that I will be able to share some of my childhood with them.

Hey, guys, it's Mark McGuire here, not exactly your favorite baseball player here but sure do sound a lot alike. Do what I did, sell everything but your favorite. With the glut of cards on the market and lack of interest, no doubt the hottest cards will always be sought after. All the rest of the cards are really just one-year wonders and better used as compost.

I loved McGwire as a kid. I was a huge A's fan - MCGwire, Canseco, Steinbach, Weiss, Lansford, Stewart, Welch, Eckersley... What a great team! I loved the Bash Brothers and we did the forearm bash in the dugout in Little League. :)

I was lucky enough to go to quite a few games in the summer of '98, and I saw McGwire hit a couple of his homers en route to breaking the single season record. I even got his autograph a couple times that season - once on a mint condition 1987 Topps card (which holds special memories for me because that was the year and brand I started collecting). :)

Given that my favorite player was Mark McGwire, my collection of 15 rookie cards is worth about $3.44 right now. I might sell it if it was worth a large amount of money, but for now it's worth more as memories as well.

I agree if the collection brings you happiness and joy then you should keep it. Granted there are times when you need to part with something like this but I'd leave that as a last resort. I've got a coin collection that I spent years amassing and although I don't actively collect coins now it still brings me happiness - I'd only sell it if money was extremely tight.

Well, I don't keep my collection as an investment to sell later. I keep them because of the sentimental value and memories I associate with them. Being able to share my memories with my kids will be much more valuable to me than a few hundred dollars - at least at this point in my life. (and I don't even have kids yet! Go figure. ;) )

Also, I don't think they have the same investment potential that the earlier cards do. Most of the earlier cards were destroyed, thrown away, short printed, or lost. The newer cards are mass-produced, and there are so many sets it is nearly impossible to keep track of them all.

I'm in the same boat. Thousands of these things sitting in some box somewhere. I keep thinking, "Boy, these things'll be worth something someday." Then I think, "Wait, who still watches baseball?" Probably people in their 60s who won't be around to buy these cards in 40 years. :(
