This Week in Review - My Favorite Personal Finance Posts

Here are some of my favorite posts from personal finance blogs this week:

Career:

  • Money and Such: Asking for (Another) Raise. Shadox offers some great advice about how he handled a raise that was less than what he was hoping for, and how he plans on working toward getting a bigger raise next time around. This was the first time I have read this blog, and I will be sure to come again.
  • A Canadian and Her Money: Why a Full-Time MBA? I am currently investigating MBA programs, and was strongly considering a distance learning course so that I could continue to earn money while continuing my education. Now I am strongly considering going to a full-time MBA program because I feel I would get a lot more out of the program. I am currently researching my options.

Investing:

  • Lazy Man and Money: Investing on a Shoestring with DRIPS. This is actually a guest post on Lazy Man’s site, and it is a very good primer for understanding what DRIPs (Dividend Reinvestment Plan) are and how they work.

Personal Finance:

  • Punny Money: Ditch Your Ancient Car and Get $3000 Toward a New One. Texas is instituting a pilot program to get older, inefficient cars off the road and get newer more efficient cars on the road. Nick gives the details.
  • Get Rich Slowly: Free Professional Financial Checkup on August 17th. JD informs us that “the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) in sponsoring Kiplinger’s Jump-Start Your Retirement Plan Days. From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. eastern time on Friday, August 17, and Thursday, August 30, NAPFA members across the U.S. will be standing by to answer your questions.” Read this post for more info.
  • Dimes to Dollars: Inventory Your House. Dimes and Mr. Dimes are getting ready to PCS across the country (move for military related reasons in non-military lingo). Dimes tells us what to take pictures of, and how to prepare an inventory of your belongings. This is great advice for insurance reasons and to do before moving!
  • Wise Bread: Jettison the Junk: Why Clutter Clouds Your Mind and Saps Your Energy. This is a great article and very well-written. I have always been a bit of a pack rat, and I am trying to simplify. It is a tough process sometimes.
  • SingleGuyMoney: I Want to Be Rich Like You. Single Guy’s young cousin thought he was rich because Single Guy lives in a nice house and drives a nice car. But he didn’t know about the debt that came with those items. Single Guy did a great job of telling it like it is and educating his young cousin about investing and saving.
  • My Open Wallet: Silicon Valley and Atlantic City. Just read this article. I would sum it up, but I can’t do a better job than Madame X.
  • Generation X: Biofuels Are Raising Beer Prices, Killing Your Buzz. The demand for biofuels is causing an decrease in the amount of barley being grown because it is less profitable than crops used for biofuels. Damn!

There are a lot of great articles out there. I hope you learn something from these, or at the minimum enjoy them! :)
