There were a lot of great articles this week in the world of personal finance blogging. Tuesday marked the first raise for the US Federal Minimum Wage in over a decade. I wrote about the Federal Minimum Wage Rising, which elicited a response from Eric, the writer of Freedom or Security, which took a dissenting viewpoint to my article with the article Minimum Wage Devil’s Advocate. We each took another turn at the argument with Federal Minimum Wage Rising – Good or Bad? (more support from me) and Minimum Wage: Back Again (Freedom or Security). Raising the Federal Minimum Wage is a complicated effort, and while we both make valid and supportable points, there is too much involved to cover in 2 or three small articles. I support raising it, but I agree with many others, including Money Smart Life who asked Is The Minimum Wage Too Low?, and Mighty Bargain Hunter, who asked what’s the point? His anecdotal evidence suggests it may be too little, too late.
Here are some of my other favorite articles this week:
- Lazy Man and Money – Choosing a 529 Plan. Lazy Man does some great analysis on how to choose the best plan to save for college.
- Lifehacker – Phishing. Lifehacker presents a 10 question quiz from computer security provider, McAfee. You can never be too careful when dealing with the on-line environment!
- Active Duty Military Money and Matters – Pay Raise 2008. It hasn’t been approved yet, but here is what is proposed, and quite possibly what will be approved.
- Getting to Enough – When Less is More. This is a great story about why the “rat race” and accumulating more is not for everyone. It’s all about priorities.
- Frugal for Life – Slang Words for American Money (article no longer available). Here’s a fun little article Now only if Plonkee Money would do one for slang words for British money! Quid, fiver, tenner are the only ones I really used when I lived in England. That would be a fun topic to read!
- Brip Blap – How to Use an FSA Account. This is a good primer, and just in time for me. My wife and I have an impending change in employment, and will have to change our health insurance soon. This is looking like the best option so far.
- Finance Physician – Make Sure You Sign Up for a Flexible Spending Account. Here is another article on the same topic. Like I said, it’s important to me right now!
- Blogging Away Debt – A Few Words About Identity Theft and Some Resources. Tricia gives us some great info and a reader account via e-mail. You can never be too careful.
I hope you all enjoy some of these great articles. Have a great weekend!

Thank you for the mention
Lazy Man’s post on 529s is definitely worth checking out, since he’s done some research on various states’ plans and come up with some good information. Thanks for linking back to my post, as well!
Thanks, I read that one too!
