Weekly Roundup

by Patrick on June 16, 2007

Wow, another week has gone by quickly! Here are some of my favorite posts from the personal finance world this week:

  • My Two Dollars – Do Your Parents Need Long Term Care Insurance?: This is a good post that hits close to home for me. My grandmother suffers from alzheimer’s disease and had to enter a long term care facility. Our family is fortunate that the sale of her house should finance the cost of her care for several years to come. However, many people do not have this good fortune. I recommend this article to anyone with aging parents or grandparents.
  • GenxFinance – 10 Tips For Dealing With Car Salesmen to Make Sure You Don’t Get Hosed: Jeremy gives us 10 great tips to deal with car salesman’s tactics and get a good deal on your next car. Be sure to read these before your next car purchase!
  • Consumerism Commentary – Wall Street Journal: Managing Money in Public: Flexo writes about a growing trend of people publicly tracking their net worth on the web. This is something a lot of personal finance blogs have been doing this for some time, but it is now becoming mainstream. Personally, I choose not to show my net worth as I am not sure what that would accomplish.
  • All Financial Matters - Which Would You Rather Have?: JLP asks his readers which they would rather have, $30,000 dollars for a wedding, or $30,000 to start of your new life as a married couple. I think it is an interesting question, particularly since I have been married less than a year. Personally, I would take a mix of the two and give my wife a nice wedding, and use the rest to help set up our life together. Read the comments for a lot more opinions!
  • The Simple Dollar – What Aspects of Personal Finance Bring You Happiness?: Trent writes about the joys involved with personal finance and reveling in the small or large victories. Paying off a loan, buying a house, and not worrying about small financial emergencies are all things that can bring one joy.
  • Dollar Buy Dollar - Two Month Anniversary of DOLLAR BUY DOLLAR – A Thank You To My Readers: Fellowes thanks his readers and is sponsoring a contest by giving away a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium Edition. I have just recently started reading Fellowes’ blog. On it, he tracks his journey out from under a “mountain of credit card debt.” Fellowes is very candid about his dealings, and I wish him well on his journey.
  • Free Money Finance – 60% of Homes Assessed For Too Much, 33% of Property Appeals Succeed: FMF tells us the majority of homes are overvalued for tax purposes. THe good thing though, is that you stand a good chance of having your taxes lowered if you prepare for it and have a good case. I wrote about how I lowered my property taxes. It was easy, and well worth my time!!!
