Don’t Forget — Postal Rate Increase May 14!!!

by Patrick on May 11, 2007

I’m sure most people are aware of this already, but don’t forget that postage increases are right around the corner! Rate increases are effective Monday, May 14th.

Not only is the United States Postal Service increasing rates for some items, but they are also restructuring the way they charge for certain items and services.

What is different?

  • Shape Based Pricing: With Shape Based Pricing, the USPS is charging rates based on how easy it is to sort and ship mail. Basically, the smaller and easier to ship, the cheaper it will be.
  • Forever Stamp: The Forever Stamp will be good for first class letters from the time of purchase until they are used. They never expire and are still good even if the rates increase again.
  • Simplified Rates for Other Services: The USPS consolidated some of the options for international shipping, insurance, and Priority and Express Mail.

The Forever Stamp is the most interesting change to the USPS pricing structure. Even though there is no limit on the amount of Forever Stamps that can be purchased, I wouldn’t recommend going out and buying a bunch of them now. Wait until just before the next price increase! ;)
