How to save money on airline tickets and other travel

More information from the rise and fall of Skybus:

Update: Skybus folded. I guess the timing wasn’t quite right to enter the airline industry. But there are more money saving tips for buying discounted travel tickets below.

Skybus Airlines, a new low cost airline out of Columbus, OH, has announced it will offer a minimum of 10 seats on each flight, priced at $10.00!. Tickets can be purchased today, but the airline does not begin flights until May 22nd. The $10 fares will be in effect until Dec. 15th, and do not include taxes and fees, so expect the $10 ticket to be closer to $40 when it’s all said and done.

Skybus plans on keeping costs low by providing internet reservations only, and not staffing a call center. In addition, Skybus plans to use both the inide and outside of the aircraft fuselage as advertising space. Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. already has a deal in place to paint Skybus aircraft with their logo. Ads will appear inside the aircraft on its tray tables, restroom doors, overhead bins, and refreshment cart. It might be advertisement overkill, but that is a small price to pay for a $10 ticket!

Operations are starting small – the only destinations currently offered originate in Columbus, OH and go to Burbank, CA, Portsmouth, NH, Richmond, VA and Kansas City, MO. Oakland, CA will be added in June, and there are plans to add Ft Lauderdale and Seattle/Vancouver in the near future. Skybus plans on expanding to 70 total aircraft in the next 5 years.

It seems like their business plan is to focus on getting passengers to the smaller airports near the large cities. The smaller airports usually charge less to the airlines. I’m sure they will look into making deals with rental car companies as well, due to the fact that they do not service the main airports which are usually closer to the city centers.

I expect they will give several other airlines a run for their money! If you happen to live near these areas, get your tickets soon, because with a limit of 10 per flight, they are sure to go fast!!! :)
